{"id":3361,"date":"2022-10-13T16:42:42","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T15:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/?p=3361"},"modified":"2022-10-19T18:42:21","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T17:42:21","slug":"sharifah-roziah-binti-mohd-kassim-wins-best-paper-award-at-ieee-dsc-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/2022\/10\/13\/sharifah-roziah-binti-mohd-kassim-wins-best-paper-award-at-ieee-dsc-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD Student Sharifah Roziah Binti Mohd Kassim wins Best Paper Award at IEEE DSC 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s7\">Sharifah Roziah Binti Mohd Kassim<\/span><span class=\"s8\">, 3rd Year PhD student at <\/span><span class=\"s8\">iCSS<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> and<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> the<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> School of Computing, together with her PhD supervisors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\/people\/3162\/li-shujun\"><span class=\"s7\">Professor <\/span><span class=\"s7\">Shujun<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> Li<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s8\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s8\">iCSS<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> Director) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\/people\/3056\/arief-budi\"><span class=\"s7\">Dr Budi <\/span><span class=\"s7\">Arief<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s8\"> (<\/span><span class=\"s8\">iCSS <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Innovation Lead), won the Best Paper Award (Experience and Practice Track) at the IEEE DSC 2022 (5th IEEE Conference on Dependable and Secure Computing), which was held on 22-24 June<\/span><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span class=\"s8\">,<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> 2022, in Edinburgh, UK<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> and online as a hybrid event<\/span><span class=\"s8\">. The title of their award-winning paper is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1109\/DSC54232.2022.9888803\">How National CSIRTs Operate: Personal Observation and Experience from MyCERT<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s8\">\u201d, co-authored with Dr <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Solahuddin<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> Shamsuddin, Chief Technology Officer <\/span><span class=\"s8\">of<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">CyberSecurity<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> Malaysia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s8\">This is an outstanding achievement, as <\/span><span class=\"s8\">the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">IEEE DSC Conference is a prestigious conference sponsored by the IEEE Reliability Society. In 2022, the IEEE DSC conference also includes a category for experience and practice papers on recent findings that predominantly contribute to design know-how or the extension of the community\u2019s knowledge about how the security protection of known techniques fares in real-world operations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s8\">Sharifah said: \u2018<\/span><span class=\"s9\">We are very pleased to have received this award for what we believe is a significant piece of work that connect<\/span><span class=\"s9\">s<\/span><span class=\"s9\"> research with practice for improving the real-world operations of Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) and the wider security operations.<\/span><span class=\"s8\">\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s8\">This paper provides personal observations and opinions regarding critical areas of operational practices in national CSIRTs, i.e., the use of tools and data for investigations of cyber incidents, cyber threat information exchange and collaboration with cross-CSIRT organisations.
