{"id":294,"date":"2013-12-10T11:26:59","date_gmt":"2013-12-10T11:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/?p=294"},"modified":"2013-12-10T11:28:38","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T11:28:38","slug":"lego-league-regional-finals-return-to-kent-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/2013\/12\/10\/lego-league-regional-finals-return-to-kent-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Lego League regional finals return to Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 250 pupils from schools across Kent took part in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstlegoleague.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">First Lego League<\/a>\u00a0regional finals at the University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/locations\/canterbury\" target=\"_blank\">Canterbury campus<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 December 2013.<\/p>\n<p>First Lego League is an international programme designed to bring science to life for school-children aged nine to sixteen through themed activities, including a hands-on robot challenge and scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>The event showcased specially designed robots made by teams of pupils from each school, with each robot being put through their paces in a sports-like atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme asked teams to design a way for people to prepare for, stay safe during, or rebuild communities after natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The event was covered by ITV Merdian news (<a title=\"Meridian cover First Lego League\" href=\"http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/meridian\/update\/2013-12-09\/students-strive-to-solve-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\">video here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the regional final on Tuesday was independent team, Invicta. Kemsing Primary School topped the table at Wednesday&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>These teams will go on to compete in the national finals at Loughborough University, with a chance of becoming the overall UK winner and representing the UK in the world finals in America next year.<\/p>\n<p>First Lego League is hosted by the University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ems\/services\/outreach\/partnership-development.html\" target=\"_blank\">Partnership Development Office<\/a>\u00a0alongside the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">School of Computing<\/a>. It aims to get young people thinking about the application of technology in real life situations and involves individually designed robots, made using the LEGO\u00ae MINDSTORMS equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Anderson, of the University\u2019s Partnership Development Office, said: \u2018First Lego League is an excellent way of getting school-children excited and involved in science and technology and, every year, over 400 teams from over 50 countries take part.
