A group of 37 year 11 students were given a taste of computer programming\u00a0as part of their residential five day Summer School. The students from the\u00a0University’s 18 Partner and KMPF (Kent and Medway Progression Federation)\u00a0schools across Kent and Medway have been given the opportunity to\u00a0experience university life first-hand, living on campus for the week and\u00a0attending lectures and seminars.<\/p>\n
As part of their week (5-9 August) on campus they had a computing taster\u00a0session which involved programming and competing with Lego robots. The\u00a0competition was based on the FIRST LEGO League, an international programme\u00a0designed to bring science to life for school-children through themed\u00a0activities, which includes a hands-on robot challenge. Within three hours\u00a0the students learned how to program their LEGO robots, make modifications\u00a0and complete a series of timed challenges.<\/p>\n
The Summer School programme is part of the University\u00b9s commitment to\u00a0widening participation and outreach in the local region. Previous\u00a0participants have found it invaluable in helping them to gain a better\u00a0understanding of higher education and to make informed choices about their\u00a0future.<\/p>\n
