{"id":1517,"date":"2018-06-18T12:57:15","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T11:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/?p=1517"},"modified":"2018-06-20T09:41:14","modified_gmt":"2018-06-20T08:41:14","slug":"technology-evangelist-sue-black-obe-to-receive-honorary-doctorate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/2018\/06\/18\/technology-evangelist-sue-black-obe-to-receive-honorary-doctorate\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology Evangelist Dr Sue Black OBE to receive honorary doctorate at Canterbury graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sueblack.co.uk\/\">Dr Sue Black OBE<\/a> will receive her honorary doctor of science degree, in recognition of her \u2018inspirational championing of women in computing and science and campaign to preserve and save Bletchley Park\u2019 at a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral on 16 July, when students from the School of Computing in Canterbury will be graduating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1mf _1mj\">A Technology Evangelist and Digital Skills Expert, Sue was awarded an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-35202667\">OBE for \u201cservices to technology\u201d <\/a>in the 2016 Queen\u2019s New Year\u2019s Honours list. She is now a UK government advisor, thought leader, Honorary Professor of Computer Science at UCL, social entrepreneur, writer and public speaker.\u00a0Her current social enterprise\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/techmums.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#techmums<\/a>\u00a0is changing lives. #techmums teaches mums tech skills and builds their confidence encouraging them into education, entreprenership and employment.\u00a0Sue now has 4 children and has recently become a grandmother.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blackse.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Sue Black<\/a> left home and school at 16, married at 20 and had 3 children by the age of 23. A single parent at 25 she went to university, gained a degree in computing then a PhD in software engineering. She\u00a0set up the UK\u2019s first online network for women in tech <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcs.org\/category\/8630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BCSWomen<\/a> and led the campaign to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savingbletchleypark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">save Bletchley Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sue\u2019s first book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/1908717920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saving Bletchley Park<\/a>\u00a0details the social media campaign she led to save Bletchley Park from 2008-2011, it has been an Amazon UK bestseller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As an encouragement to our graduating students Sue said:\u00a0&#8216;Don\u2019t wait for opportunity to come to you, get out there and find it!
