Graduating with a Distinction in his Cyber Security MSc, Gabriel Ruaud talks to us about his time at Kent and how the institute of Cyber Security for Society (iCSS) supported his ambitions, which included sponsorship for extra EC-Council certification.
Why did you choose Kent?
I chose Kent because of the excellent MSc in Cyber Security program and its partnership with my engineering school in France.
What are you doing now, and what are your future ambitions? How are your degree and the EC-Council training helping you achieve them?
I am a cybersecurity consultant at Ernst & Young Luxembourg, currently involved in governance topics, including maturity assessment, vulnerability management, risk assessments, and cyber strategy, to optimize value delivery. My aim is to specialize in penetration testing and spend a few years sharpening my technical skills.
The MSc in Cyber Security provided me with the technical knowledge needed to understand my clients’ challenges, articulate realistic and comprehensive responses, and enable insightful conversations with stakeholders at all levels. The various certifications I had the opportunity to take helped me build my professional legitimacy and are powerful enablers when it comes to negotiating my way into cybersecurity, finding opportunities, and choosing my path.
How did you get your job? Any advice for our graduates?
I discovered this opportunity on EY’s website. Although it initially seemed out of my reach, with the help of the amazing team at Kent Careers, as well as my family and friends, I was able to build a solid profile and achieve success in the interviews.
If you are also searching for such a position, it’s important not to rush your application process. Take the time to mature a relevant application that is tailored specifically to the position you are interested in. By doing this, you will increase your chances of being selected for the job, and you will avoid applying to jobs that do not align with your interests or goals.
What was the best part of your Industrial Placement?
I consider the best aspect of my industrial placement to be the opportunity I was given to work directly with a partner. As an intern, I was exposed to various business, political, and technical challenges. This experience helped me understand that my job is not just a technical position where I solve problems, but rather a purpose-driven activity whose primary focus is to bring value to customers.
What are your favourite parts of Canterbury?
Canterbury is a wonderful place to be. If you’re accustomed to large cities, you might be concerned about its size, but you’ll find that you won’t get bored. The city centre, with its medieval atmosphere and hidden parks, is, in my opinion, the best place to be. Despite being a popular choice (and as such, Crowded), Wetherspoons is perfect for spending time with good friends. Bishop’s Finger and Shakespeare are excellent options for more relaxed occasions. If you are looking for a nice meal, The old coach and horses is where to go.
Who’s your favourite staff member? (We won’t tell)
I loved my experience at Kent, even though it took place during the COVID pandemic. I think the atmosphere is fantastic. All of the instructors were human oriented and had excellent technical knowledge. If I had to pick a favourite staff member, I would probably choose Kate Ayres, with whom I had great conversations and open sharing.
