Developing Teaching for Experienced Staff at Kent – Spring Term 2017

These practical workshop sessions are intended for staff who have been teaching for some time and are interested in sharing and developing their practice. Each session will begin with a short introduction, designed to set the context, present ideas and generate discussion on how you can put these ideas into practice.

These sessions continue the theme from 2015/16:  ‘Massification: Recognising and responding to change.’

The first session of the Spring Term, led by Dr Chris Shepherd (School of Physical Sciences), will be held on Tuesday 7th February 12.45pm-2.00pm and is titled ‘A novel approach to running final year research projects: empowering students to manage their own projects through embedded  employability’.

Sessions are free and take place in the UELT Seminar Room (unless otherwise stated).

University Teaching Prizes 2016

Excellent teaching was celebrated at the University Teaching Prizes ceremony on 5th October.  These annual awards recognise the dedication and creativity of staff working to give their students the best possible learning experience at the University.

First HEA Principal Fellowship awarded at Kent

Although UELT has supported almost 700 staff to be recognised by the HEA to date, Dr Naylor is the first member of Kent staff to be awarded a Principal Fellowship.

Dr Naylor’s fellowship is in recognition of her sustained and effective record of strategic impact in teaching and supporting learning at institutional and national level, having also been awarded a Fellowship of the Leadership Foundation (LFHE) in 2014.

As a highly experienced member of senior staff with wide-ranging academic and strategic leadership responsibilities in connection with these areas, she has strengthened the University’s ability to support both staff and students based on the services delivered by her teams.

Welcoming the news of Dr Naylor’s Principal Fellowship, Professor April McMahon, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, said: ‘I am pleased for Louise and for the University – this is a real cause for celebration, and another step in demonstrating the value we give to teaching and learning at Kent.’

Dr Naylor commented: ‘I am delighted to have received this Fellowship and hope that it will inspire others around the University to have their excellence in learning and teaching practice recognised in this way.’

Currently, the University supports staff in gaining fellowship of the HEA through their academic practice and education programmes and has increased HEA recognition by over 2.5 times over the last three years.

Learning and Teaching Network – Writing Workshop for administrative staff on 10 November 2016 – this event is now full with a waiting list

You are invited to a unique Learning and Teaching Network session on Thursday 10th November from 9.30am–12.30pm in the UELT seminar room 

A half-day workshop with novelist Susan Barker

The ability to write well is an indispensable skill that most people wish they could improve. This inspiring workshop will explore techniques you can use to become a more efficient and persuasive writer. Run by Susan Barker, a novelist with extensive experience as a writing facilitator, this half-day course will include many practical tips and fun activities to strengthen and energise your writing. Participants will complete a pre-workshop questionnaire, so specific writing issues can be addressed.

As places are strictly limited, priority will be given to those who can attend for the whole course.

Who should attend: This workshop is for those who would like to improve the effectiveness and quality of their non-academic writing. All staff are welcome to attend.

Due to the popularity of this session and the limited number of spaces available, please note the following:

The session is free of charge to participants, but schools/departments are asked to provide a cost code. If a participant fails to attend or cancels without at least 2 working days’ notice, the code will be debited £60 for a half day programme,  A charge will not be made in cases of illness or for other valid reasons.

Developing teaching for more experienced staff

What are lectures for and how can we maximise their benefits for teaching and learning?

This session will centre on the role of the lecture in contemporary university practice and student learning. In a university environment where the latest technological developments can be seen as a boon to teaching, how do traditional methods fare? As student diversity is increasingly recognised, how should we pitch our lectures to have the most impact?

In this session, Jonathan Ilan (Senior Lecturer in Criminology, SSPSSR) will lightly introduce some sociological concepts that support the continuing relevance of the traditional lecture. There will be some reflection offered on practical techniques that might be used to hold the attention and focus of a majority of students within them. With attendee discussion and participation actively encouraged, the session will provide a forum for us to share effective practice and to reflect on our role as human educators in an increasingly online world. ​

Student Mentors’ Awards Ceremony 30th March 2016

On the 30th March students from 18 schools involved in the Academic Peer Mentoring (APM) scheme attended an awards ceremony and lunch hosted by the Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS). The awards were presented to the mentors by Dr Louise Naylor, Director of UELT. Mentors from the KBS, CEWL, Pol IR and SECL made presentations and showcased the impact this additional support has had on student achievement. The event was recorded graphically by a small team of mentors who have received graphic recording training from Banter: a Medway based graphic recording company http://www.banter.uk.net/
“Being a mentor has been fun and I have learnt skills which have helped me to prioritise my workload and communicate effectively with lots of different people.” (Fatin Binti-Azhar: KBS stage 2)
The APM scheme now has 350 mentors and it has proved to be an excellent way of promoting student-centered learning. This initiative depends on student volunteers and is very much a student-led response – both undergraduates and postgraduates offer encouragement and academic advice to other students in the year below thus helping them to improve their performance.  As such, it has become an important intervention in the University’s OFFA project.
Mentors benefit greatly from the scheme as they deepen their understanding of the course content as well as enhance their employability skills. Mentoring counts towards the KSCV and employability points scheme. This year it will also be a verifiable activity itemised on students’ HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Record) as SLAS has also delivered a new optional Kent Extra module for mentors.

Each year, the University awards a number of prizes to individual staff or teams for outstanding work in teaching and/or learning support. The call for applications for the 2016 prizes is now open. The closing date for applications is Friday 13th May 2016.
