{"id":702,"date":"2022-11-17T15:38:53","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T15:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ucuuok\/?p=702"},"modified":"2022-11-17T15:38:53","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T15:38:53","slug":"eg-to-cut-degree-programmes-in-all-divisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ucuuok\/2022\/11\/17\/eg-to-cut-degree-programmes-in-all-divisions\/","title":{"rendered":"EG to cut degree programmes in ALL divisions?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ucuuok\/files\/2022\/11\/WEacoSNmSmnlQFR-800x450-noPad.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-703\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/ucuuok\/files\/2022\/11\/WEacoSNmSmnlQFR-800x450-noPad.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"421\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a title=\"https:\/\/chng.it\/Cz8nCPCTsv\" href=\"https:\/\/protect-eu.mimecast.com\/s\/i_ISCX6o3CXqE8jT6dqdj?domain=chng.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Sign the petition here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<ul>\n<li>Kent\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protect-eu.mimecast.com\/s\/Qvh3CY6v4CLNVnmhGFU9-?domain=kent.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Executive Group<\/a> (EG) are considering closing a large number degree programmes across ALL divisions, not just the Arts &amp; Humanities (which has hitherto been the focus of cuts).<\/li>\n<li>Any degree that recruits under 20 students could be at risk.<\/li>\n<li>Undergraduate tuition fees are still the university\u2019s main source of income and they are used to pay staff salaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>What EG seem to want<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFix\u201d timetabling issues by cutting degree programmes &amp; modules<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Create \u2018mega\u2019 degrees, with less specialisation, less student choice and less research led teaching<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cut degree programmes \u2192 Lose students &amp; income \u2192 Make jobs unviable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>This is a significant &amp; credible threat<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">EG have *already* scrapped the Social Policy programme in SSPSSR (a particularly strong &amp; successful department), without consulting staff or trade unions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Our recent deal of \u2018no compulsory redundancies for all staff\u2019 expires on 31st December 2022.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Our new deal (which is still being negotiated) of \u2018no compulsory redundancies for staff in A&amp;H as a result of the review\u2019 does not cover staff outside A&amp;H &#8211; EG have only just made public their intention to scrap degree programmes outside of A&amp;H. While we have protection from immediate redundancies, if degree programmes are \u2018taught out\u2019 and closed over the next few years, EG are likely to cut more staff once those programmes are closed, or offer \u2018bumped redundancy\u2019 e.g. redundancy after an agreed period like 2-3 years.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Note that our deal so far is still a significant achievement &#8211; witness the threat of mass compulsory redundancies at Birkbeck.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>What degree programme closures mean<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After one to three years of losing student income, EG are likely to use this as a pretext to impose compulsory redundancies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may be pressured to take \u201cVoluntary Severance\u201d. If you have any verbal or written evidence of this, email krichardson-dawes@ucu.org.uk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may be forced or pressured to accept a new role on far lower pay. The branch is trying to negotiate a better redeployment policy, including no downgrading.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You are far less likely to teach your research specialisms &amp; programmes you have nurtured over the years.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>EG\u2019s record<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A \u201cKent Vision\u201d IT system so dysfunctional it has failed to keep even the most basic records of student registration and attendance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kent Vision problems have resulted in significant issues retaining students, who staff worked so hard to recruit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A failing timetabling system, which has compounded the issues above. There has been a 100% turnover of staff in timetabling in the past 12 months. In this respect, the university is not fulfilling its basic functions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u2018Organising for Success\u2019 has been a failure, with systems and structures far less effective, and staff workloads at impossible levels.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>UCU\u2019s alternative vision<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kent UCU negotiators have put forward counter proposals for recruitment growth, as well as a fairer, partial and temporary redeployment policy. The branch has proposed bringing back highly profitable joint honours programmes, which generated over \u00a31 million in income.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">EG has until 21st November to negotiate with us over our concerns about CRs and related issues. Every single division is under threat.
