Eric Emerson, Professor of Disability and Health Research at Lancaster University gave our final Research Seminar for this academic year. “Improving the health and lives of people with learning disabilities: The Learning Disabilities Public Health Observatory”.
Following the publication of Michael’s Report into inequalities in access to health care, the Department of Health established a specialist public health observatory on learning disabilities for England. Prof Emerson’s talk looked at the rationales that lie behind the Observatory’s work and reviewed its progress to date. Concluding that people with learning disabilities continue to face significant levels of health inequality, which are to an extent avoidable and that existing information systems are still not sufficient to support effective commissioning. Commenting that a continuing public health focus on learning disability would add significantly to current policy and practice.
A well supported and thoroughly enjoyable evening rounded off a successful and well attended series of talks. For details of our next series of Seminars starting in September/October 2012 please see: http://www.kent.ac.uk/tizard/research/seminars/index.html
