Are you a family carer for a child with a learning disability, autism or developmental delay aged 0-5 years?

Dr Nick Gore (Clinical Psychologist and Researcher at Tizard) has developed a new programme for family carers of young children who have a learning disability, autism or a developmental delay.  The programme offers practical strategies for promoting your child’s development, support to public services and ways to look after your own wellbeing.

The programme is designed to give family carers lots of information and support about looking after a child with a learning/developmental disability along with a range of resources and tools that could be useful as the child develops.  All of the sessions and resources have been developed with help from experts on the session topics and drawing on the experience of family carers of children with disabilities.  During the programme group members will be able to build up a pack of information and resources that can be used and added to throughout their child’s development.

The programme is free of charge and is 8 sessions long with each session lasting two and a half hours.  The sessions are designed to be relaxed, helpful and fun.  Each session will be delivered by Nick and a family carer of a child with a developmental disability who can offer practical advise based on their own experiences of looking after their child.

The Tizard Centre has an international reputation of excellence in working with people with learning disabilities and those who support them.  Nick and his team are seeking family carers who would like to take part in an initial evaluation study of this new programme.  The programme will be run in the Canterbury area in October 2013 and again in early 2014.  The exact dates, times and location will be confirmed at a later date and will be flexible around the needs and preferences of group members as far as possible.

If you are interested in participating or would like more information please contact Dr Nick Gore (n.j.gore@kent.ac.uk 01227 827755) or Serena Brady (s.r.l.brady@kent.ac.uk 01227 827446) who will be glad to discuss this with you.
