Kelly-Marie Taylor

MBA 2020, UK

“My goal is not to be better than anyone else, but to be better than I used to be.” Dr Wayne W Dyer

I decided to go into software development because I wanted to make people’s lives easier using technology.

My first job out of uni was as a software developer. However, I quickly found that I was more suited to working with people rather than with machines. I moved into project management and then into my first team lead role. I haven’t looked back since.

My team has always been my passion, though I still enjoy organising and problem solving. I find the roles I enjoy most are ones that include these three things. I am currently a Technology Manager responsible for a team spread across UK, Hungary and India. Together, we develop and maintain the most visited page on the Hotels.com website – the Property Details Page.

Outside of work, I regularly participate in practical shotgun and mini-rifle events at my local gun club. I also scuba dive, sew and enjoy murder mysteries

Achievements

  • Landing my first managerial role for a software development team. I significantly improved communications and wellbeing within the team
  • Being approached to run the department when my senior was on secondment

What attracted you to the Kent MBA programme and why?

When I decided to study an MBA, I was concerned my experience would not be broad enough for the course. However, as I read more about the different projects and opportunities that the Kent MBA has to offer, I realised I would gain the experience that I lacked on the course.  Other universities didn’t seem to offer the same experience.

Having studied for my bachelors at Kent and understanding the opportunities the Kent MBA presented, it was a no brainer for me!

What were your motivations for undertaking an MBA?

Working with the Managing Director at my last company, I was given a taste of a different side to problem solving within a business. I found it fascinating to learn from him. I want to broaden my knowledge and experience, building skills to naturally consider that holistic view of the industry your company operates in and what business drivers can be used to accelerate and grow it.

Aspiration

I have been a team manager for a few years and have experienced lots of different challenges. I want to take my career to the next level, perhaps moving into a director role within my company. I hope the Kent MBA will help me develop new techniques and to help me do that.

Advice

Build your network. Keep hold of relationships as you build and develop your career. You often come across the same people again, especially if you stay in the same industry.  You never know when opportunities will arise that will allow you to help and support each other.
