Adam Bissill

Kent – United Kingdom
The Kent MBA 2017
(Full-time)

“I am interested in starting my own business and moving into consultancy.”

My background is predominantly in secondary education, as a Spanish teacher and in a number of management roles within the independent sector. Most recent posts include Head of Department, Lower Master and Boarding Housemaster. I have also had involvement in fundraising, admissions and marketing within schools.

I am currently taking a break from education to pursue the Kent MBA which will allow me to build on existing skills and broaden my career options.

Outside hobbies include travel, bee-keeping, European literature, economics and sport. I am also a volunteer mentor for young entrepreneurs with The Kent Foundation.

Experience

My key professional achievements include becoming a Boarding Housemaster, looking after the academic and pastoral welfare of 65 teenagers (a role I had always aspired to). I lead a successful academic department with strong uptake of Spanish within the school and excellent exam results. I was also proud to be awarded a school teacher study award from Selwyn College, Cambridge enabling me to pursue a month’s study in South American literature.

Aspirations

My future career options are currently open. I may decide to move back into a senior role in secondary education but I am equally interested in starting my own business and moving into consultancy. I am currently working in partnership with my wife in The Specialist Generalist, a small organisational development consultancy. I have taken a break from a career which had a very clearly defined path in order to try something new. Leaving an industry which I have immensely enjoyed was a leap of faith and I relish the excitement of what the future holds.

I was very impressed with Kent at the Open Day and also at the briefing session offered by the Kent Business School. The campus, breadth and ranking of the Kent MBA was also a key deciding factor alongside the relatively small and diverse cohort.

Advice

Perseverance and stepping back from an issue is a great way to achieve a better perspective and greater clarity.
