Out of the Loop? Gender, Collaboration, and Community in Engineering.
\nThis interactive talk explored how gender dynamics in engineering education impact female and minoritised students’ technical confidence and sense of belonging. Drawing on real student experiences, this talk unpacked the hidden barriers in group collaboration, why isolated learners turn to AI study tools, and how informal peer networks shape academic success.<\/p>\n
The Women in IT & Technical Services Network was delighted to team up with the School of Engineering, Mathematics & Physics to host an inspiring lunchtime event with Laura Woods from the University of Sheffield, exploring gender, confidence and belonging in engineering education.<\/p>\n
Laura is a final year PhD student at the University of Sheffield. Her research investigates the information experiences of gender minorities in engineering education. As a former engineering librarian, Laura has 10 years of experience working with engineering and computer science students and observing the subtle gender dynamics at play in the university environment.<\/p>\n
Students and staff gathered over pizza and informal networking before settling in for a lively and interactive discussion that sparked conversation and shone a light on the real experiences of students in STEM.<\/p>\n
Drawing on her research, Laura shared fascinating insights into the hidden barriers that women and gender-minoritised students can face in engineering programmes, from navigating group work dynamics to dealing with feelings of academic isolation. The discussion also explored the growing use of AI study tools and the important role that friendships, peer support and informal networks play in helping students build confidence and feel that they belong.<\/p>\n
What made the session particularly engaging was the opportunity for attendees to reflect on their own experiences and join an open conversation about how universities can create more inclusive environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.<\/p>\n
As a network, WITTS is passionate about creating spaces where people can connect, learn from one another and discuss topics that matter. This event did exactly that, bringing together colleagues from across the University for an afternoon of fresh perspectives, meaningful discussion and plenty of food for thought.<\/p>\n
