The University’s HEaTED membership includes a discount on all HEaTED CPD courses, and a small number of credits each year that allow for some courses to be undertaken by employees without the need for funding to be in place.
Earlier this year I attended the online version of the Advanced Leadership Skills for Technical Staff programme, which was a full two days of leadership and management training with a small cohort consisting of those in management positions and those aspiring to leadership roles.

The course description is: ‘The programme has been designed for those who have line management responsibility or lead others in matrix management structures, who would like to equip themselves with the tools, knowledge and advanced people management skills.’
The course was delivered by Suhel Miah, the Head of Training & Development for HEaTED, who has had a 30-year technical services career predominantly with UCL and the University of Westminster. Suhel brought valuable insights to the delivery of the course, whist engaging attendees to impart their own insights.
There was a prolific amount of slides and knowledge to absorb within the two days (which were spread about a week apart). My only criticism of the delivery (which was shared by some others), is that the slides were not shared with us until after the programme had concluded. This made it challenging to recall some of the topics that we questioned on, just because of the intensity of the pace.
Overall, I have found the course very useful in my own practice and recommend it to others in technical services that are looking to pursue a path into leadership.
In fact, I highly recommend taking advantage of the HEaTED courses if you are able to do so, because the delivery and content is very beneficial. Although the topics may be similar other courses, those from HEaTED are always directed at those in technical roles.
