{"id":263,"date":"2017-10-09T11:56:06","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T10:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/?p=263"},"modified":"2017-10-09T11:56:06","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T10:56:06","slug":"pokemon-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/2017\/10\/09\/pokemon-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Pokemon Go(als)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My two worlds collided\u00a0last week when I was alerted to the fact that Pokemon Go creators Niantic were &#8216;standing with the global goals&#8217; and were offering free global goals t shirts to every Pokemon Go players avatars.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you are not familiar with either Pokemon Go or the Global Goals, this next bit is for you:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pok%C3%A9mon_Go\">Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0free-to-play,\u00a0location-based\u00a0augmented reality game\u00a0developed by\u00a0Niantic\u00a0for\u00a0iOS\u00a0and\u00a0Android\u00a0devices. The game was the result of a collaboration between Niantic and\u00a0Nintendo, by way of\u00a0The Pok\u00e9mon Company.\u00a0 Players create and customize their own\u00a0avatars, which as the\u00a0player moves within their real world surroundings, their avatars move within the game&#8217;s map. The purpose of this is to catch and collect Pokemon which if you were not a\u00a090&#8217;s kid probably need their own explanation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-266\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/Pokemon_Go.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/Pokemon_Go.png 320w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/Pokemon_Go-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/Pokemon_Go-100x63.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/2017\/02\/06\/the-global-goals\/\">The Global Goals<\/a> are the 17 aspirational goals established by 193 countries and United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in 2015. So why have Pokemon Go and The United Nations paired up on this project?<\/p>\n<p>At the last estimate\u00a0around 65 million people are playing Pokemon Go each month\u00a0and perhaps unsurprisingly\u00a0the majority of players are under 30.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-267\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/pokemon-age.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/pokemon-age.png 800w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/pokemon-age-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/pokemon-age-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sustainkent\/files\/2017\/10\/pokemon-age-100x61.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/youthenvoy\/youngleadersmeettheleaders\/\">The United Nations and World Economic Forum <\/a>has said before that\u00a0that young people are crucial in delivering the goals as they are the people that are going to be most challenged by the current status quo,\u00a0for example\u00a0unstable work, low wages, education inequality, climate change effects etc&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So what better way to keep the conversation going about the goals amongst young people than by making it a part of well loved and daily signed in game.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Niantic have asked, <em>&#8220;We hope everyone will join us in having their avatar wear the Global Goals shirt proudly to show their support and spread awareness for these critically important Goals.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It may be a little thing but I have to say it has been heartening to see just how many other Pokemon trainers are wearing the Global Goals shirt as I have been out playing the game.
