Underground maps \u2013 real and imaginary \u2013 will be the focus of a new exhibition opening at the University of Kent on Tuesday 3 July.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The exhibition, titled \u2018Underground Maps Unravelled: Explorations in Information Design\u2019 takes place in the Studio 3 Gallery on the University\u2019s Canterbury campus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The exhibition uses the iconic London Underground map, designed by Henry Beck in 1933, to explore how map design could be improved. It features experimental and rule-breaking map illustrations by Dr Maxwell Roberts, a researcher at the University of Essex.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The exhibition is sponsored by the Diagrams 2012 Conference, an international forum for the study of diagrams, running at the University of Kent from 2-6 July.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conference organiser, Dr Peter Rodgers, Senior Lecturer in the University\u2019s School of Computing, commented: \u2018Maps in all their different guises fascinate people all over the world. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see the results of Maxwell Roberts\u2019 extensive research on fresh approaches to map design.\u2019<\/p>\n
