Barbara has presented various pieces of work at institutions around the country promoting the importance of diversifying the curriculum. If you\u2019d like to find out more please read the update below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>March<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mentoring and University Insights for Black Students &#8211; an outreach programme with Kent student ambassadors.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Mentoring and University Insight for Black students<\/em> was launched on 3<sup>rd<\/sup> March as part of a four-week programme for year 12 black sixth form students. At the first event Dr Barbara Adewumi presented her PhD research on \u2018Black middle parents and their aspirations for their children\u2019, Barbara provided practical considerations when researching universities prior to applying through UCAS as well as various opportunities at Kent to work on research projects.\u00a0 Along with Diversity Mark Intern Officer Patrice Mighton they spoke about work-study skills and the benefits of student collaboration on projects such as Diversity Mark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess\/news.html?view=903\">Find out more<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/files\/2021\/05\/mentoring-and-university-insight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-998 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/files\/2021\/05\/mentoring-and-university-insight.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eastern Arc: Challenging Racism and Decolonising the Curriculum podcast series<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Barbara Adewumi and Diversity Mark Intern Officer Patrice Mighton appeared on a topical podcast series hosted by Eastern Arc, a research consortium including staff and students from East Anglia University and Essex University on the topic of Challenging Racism and Decolonising the Curriculum. Dr Barbara Adewumi, Patrice Mighton and students and staff from East Anglia University and Essex University participated in an Eastern Arc webinar panel discussion on Decolonising the Curriculum answering questions from various HE institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k4xg-eQ6JJI\">Watch here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/files\/2021\/05\/Eastern-Arc-webinar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1001 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/files\/2021\/05\/Eastern-Arc-webinar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat role does evidence play in closing race equality gaps?\u201d TASO Conference panel discussion <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Barbara Adewumi and Patrice Mighton were guest speakers at the first Centre for Transforming Attainment Student Outcomes in HE (TASO) event on evidence and evaluation and appeared alongside Leicester University. The popular conference was attended by 300 guests on the first day. TASO awarded the Diversity Mark project a \u00a360,000 grant to evaluate the impact of the project on reducing the race equality gaps. Student Success is working in partnership with Professor Kathleen Quinlan and Research Associate Dr Miyoung Ahn from CSHE.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/taso.org.uk\/news-item\/evidence-and-evaluation-conference-videos-now-available\/\">Find out more<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/files\/2021\/05\/TASO-conference.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1002 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/files\/2021\/05\/TASO-conference.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anglia Ruskin University Diversity Mark webinar presentation <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Laura Bailey from SECL, Dr Barbara Adewumi and special student guest Wayne Laviniere (SECL\u2019s Diversity Mark Intern Officer in 2019) were invited to host a webinar presentation and Q &amp; A session for library, teaching staff and students at Anglia Ruskin University on how to diversify reading lists. They spoke about their collaborative work on their Diversity Mark projects in SECL and SSPSSR and challenges\/opportunities this presented \u2013 the feedback received was extremely positive.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMany thanks to the Diversity Mark team for the excellent\u00a0webinar. It was great to have your\u00a0insights into this important work on diversity in the curriculum, and to hear\u00a0first-hand\u00a0how it has benefited students\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFinding time to attend the Diversity Mark session was well worth it.
