{"id":563,"date":"2018-10-29T14:31:42","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T14:31:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/?p=563"},"modified":"2018-10-29T14:31:42","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T14:31:42","slug":"introduction-to-unconscious-bias-wednesday-7th-november-at-1-pm-in-jlt-all-welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/studentsuccess-news\/2018\/10\/29\/introduction-to-unconscious-bias-wednesday-7th-november-at-1-pm-in-jlt-all-welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to Unconscious Bias &#8211; Wednesday 7th November at 1 pm in JLT &#8211; all welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, I\u2019m delighted to announce that on <strong>Wednesday 7<sup>th<\/sup> November at 1 pm in JLT<\/strong>, we will be welcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/mcbridewright.com\/about\/biography\/\">Dr Mark McBride-Wright<\/a>, Managing Director of Equal Engineers and Co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/interengineeringlgbt.com\/\">InterEngineering<\/a> to the School of Engineering and Digital Arts for a session on <strong>Introduction to Unconscious Bias<\/strong>.\u00a0 (see attached poster)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your background, personal experiences, societal stereotypes and cultural context can have an impact on your decisions and actions without you realising. Implicit or unconscious bias happens\u00a0by our brains making incredibly quick judgments and assessments of people and situations without us realising. Our biases are influenced by our\u00a0<strong>background<\/strong><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>cultural environment<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>personal experiences<\/strong>. We may not even be aware of these views and opinions, or be aware of their full impact and implications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mark is a \u00a0chartered chemical engineer specialising in health and safety with experience in oil and gas, government services and defence. He holds a PhD and Masters in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London. He is a recognised leader in diversity and inclusion in the engineering and construction industry. He is chair and co-founder of InterEngineering, an organisation which connects, informs and empowers LGBT+ engineers and supporters. Under Mark\u2019s leadership, the organisation has become the leading organisation addressing LGBT+ inclusion in the engineering and construction sector engaging prominent engineering institutes and employers, with a membership of over 500 engineers.
