Introduction to Unconscious Bias – Wednesday 7th November at 1 pm in JLT – all welcome

As part of our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, I’m delighted to announce that on Wednesday 7th November at 1 pm in JLT, we will be welcoming Dr Mark McBride-Wright, Managing Director of Equal Engineers and Co-founder of InterEngineering to the School of Engineering and Digital Arts for a session on Introduction to Unconscious Bias.  (see attached poster)

Your background, personal experiences, societal stereotypes and cultural context can have an impact on your decisions and actions without you realising. Implicit or unconscious bias happens by our brains making incredibly quick judgments and assessments of people and situations without us realising. Our biases are influenced by our backgroundcultural environment and personal experiences. We may not even be aware of these views and opinions, or be aware of their full impact and implications.

Mark is a  chartered chemical engineer specialising in health and safety with experience in oil and gas, government services and defence. He holds a PhD and Masters in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London. He is a recognised leader in diversity and inclusion in the engineering and construction industry. He is chair and co-founder of InterEngineering, an organisation which connects, informs and empowers LGBT+ engineers and supporters. Under Mark’s leadership, the organisation has become the leading organisation addressing LGBT+ inclusion in the engineering and construction sector engaging prominent engineering institutes and employers, with a membership of over 500 engineers. Mark authored a report for the UK Government on tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in engineering and is working with the UK Government on implementation of the recommended measures.

Key learning objectives from the event will include:

– Develop self-awareness of the unconscious mind

– Learn about different types of bias and how it is a form of natural mental shortcut which needs to be managed

– Experiment on how bias occurs in day to day decision-making in the workplace: recruiting and hiring, team dynamics and career development

– Receive action-orientated strategies they can use to remove bias from decisions

– Be empowered to raise awareness of unconscious bias in teams and wider workplace and its potential impact

Please book here or just turn up on the day for what is expected to be a very informative talk.  All welcome.
