Newly-published Student Success paper focuses on attendance and attainment

Robust data that explores strategies and activities to improve student attendance and attainment will always be welcomed within the HE environment, and the University of Kent’s Student Success (EDI) department has recently published a paper that focuses on this aspect of research.

The new paper Student Success Evaluation Framework: Determining causality in activities to improve attendance and attainment is authored by Dr Ellen Dowie (Data and Evaluation Manager, Student Success (EDI)) and Dr Alexandra De La Torre (Evaluation Consultant, Student Success (EDI)).

The research draws on the causal links between student-based interventions and improved outcomes and seminar/lecture attendance.  It also helps identify the relevant activities that create impact in a positive way.

Developed over a number of years, the Student Success Evaluation Framework is informed by the Theory of Change approach to programme planning and evaluation.

Ellen Dowie explains, “The results outlined in this new paper will help assess the level of impact of the Student Success interventions on students’ attendance and attainment, ultimately providing a tool and road map for academic schools and divisions to fine tune and prioritise their activities moving forward.    This type of published research also helps the University of Kent provide evidence of impact on our Access and Participation Plan (APP) through evaluation – something which is now even more important  in order to meet our institutional Office for Students’ targets”.
