Dr Nira Chamberlain will discuss the ‘Black Heroes of Mathematics’ at a FREE online event organised in collaboration with the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science.
Dr Nira Chamberlain OBE PhD HonDSc was recently awarded an OBE for Services to Mathematical Sciences in the 2022 New Year Honours List. President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications from 2020-2021, Dr Chamberlain was announced the World’s Most Interesting Mathematician as Winner of the Big Internet Math Off in 2018, and has been named in the PowerList of the Top 100 Most Influential Black Britons for four years running (2018-2021).
The 2017 film Hidden Figures was based on the true story of a group of black female mathematicians that served as the brains behind calculating the momentous launch of the NASA astronaut John Glenn into orbit. However, these mathematicians of colour are not the only ‘Hidden Figures’. In this talk, Nira discusses other inspirational men and women who overcame obstacles to prove that ‘mathematics is truly for everybody!’
