{"id":1178,"date":"2023-01-20T11:16:19","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T11:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-services\/?p=1178"},"modified":"2023-01-23T09:27:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T09:27:46","slug":"holocaust-memorial-day-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-services\/2023\/01\/20\/holocaust-memorial-day-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Holocaust Memorial Day 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Holocaust Memorial Day &#8211; 27 January<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">Between 1941 and 1945, six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis during the <\/span>Holocaust<span class=\"S1PPyQ\">. <\/span><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">The Nazis also murdered millions of others<\/span> including Roma, Gypsy and Sinti people, people with disabilities, gay people, and many whose political views or religious beliefs threatened <span class=\"S1PPyQ\">the Nazi regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On 27 January 2000, the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, 46 governments signed the Stockholm Declaration and founded Holocaust Memorial Day. This day is to remember the millions murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in Cambodia (1975-1979), Rwanda (1994), Bosnia (1995) and later Darfur in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On YouTube, you can watch Medway campus Chaplain Lynne Martin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AvMY7tr36mw\">seven-minute video marking Holocaust Memorial Day<\/a>, in which she shines a light on the hope, bravery and heroism of an individual in the midst of horror and atrocity. You can also learn more about the Holocaust by using your Kent login to access an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kanopy.com\/en\/kentuk\/category\/10679\">online library of films.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fighting antisemitism and hate at Kent\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prejudice, discrimination and hatred based solely on difference is still pervasive in society today. This includes anti-Jewish attitudes, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lordslibrary.parliament.uk\/antisemitic-incidents-in-universities-community-security-trust-report\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reports of antisemitism increasing at Universities<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.org.uk\/independent_investigation_into_antisemitism\">investigation into antisemitism within the National Union of Student (NUS).<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Antisemitism is a form of racism and religious discrimination and we do not tolerate it at Kent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/staff-student-news\/2021\/08\/06\/adopting-the-ihra-definition-of-antisemitism\/\">adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism<\/a> <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and the Jewish Declaration of Antisemitism. This is an important statement of our solidarity with the Jewish community and our commitment to stamping out antisemitism at Kent. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Light the Darkness &#8211; 27 January, 16:00.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">On 27 January at 16:00, you are invited remember pause and reflect by placing a battery-operated tea light in your window to honour Holocaust victims and show you stand against prejudice and hatred today. <span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can also wear purple in solidarity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">The battery-operated candles are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/whats-on\/event\/59067\/light-the-darkness-collect-a-battery-tealight-for-holocaust-memorial-day\">available <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/whats-on\/event\/59067\/light-the-darkness-collect-a-battery-tealight-for-holocaust-memorial-day\"><span class=\"S1PPyQ\">free from Mandela Reception from Friday 20 January.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(For safety reasons, please do not use a candle with a real flame.
