{"id":668,"date":"2025-10-23T09:45:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T08:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/?p=668"},"modified":"2025-10-23T09:47:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T08:47:10","slug":"voices-for-sanctuary-gospel-music-at-canterbury-cathedral-31-oct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/2025\/10\/23\/voices-for-sanctuary-gospel-music-at-canterbury-cathedral-31-oct\/","title":{"rendered":"Voices for Sanctuary: Gospel music at Canterbury Cathedral, 31 Oct"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"noSpacingAbove spacingBelow\" data-text-type=\"withSpacing\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Gospel music comes to Canterbury Cathedral in Support of Refugee and Asylum-Seeking Students.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"noSpacingAbove spacingBelow\" data-text-type=\"withSpacing\"><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><br \/>\nThis Autumn term, the University of Kent marks its 60th anniversary and newly awarded University of Sanctuary Status with a powerful evening of music, unity, and hope at Voices for Sanctuary, <strong>a special gospel concert hosted in the awe-inspiring setting of Canterbury Cathedral.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Hosted by our Chancellor, broadcaster and musician\u00a0YolanDa\u00a0Brown OBE DL\u00a0and produced by acclaimed gospel musical director\u00a0Goziam\u00a0Okogwu\u00a0(The Rite Collective), the event will take place on<strong>\u00a0Friday 31 October 2025<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The evening will feature performances from three of the UK\u2019s leading gospel choirs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">\u2022<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>University of Kent Gospel Choir<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Two-time winners of\u00a0University Gospel Choir of the Year (UGCY), celebrated for their inspiring vocals and heartfelt performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">\u2022<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>Canterbury Christ Church Gospel Choir<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A cornerstone of the CCU community since 2005, known for soulful melodies and uplifting energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">\u2022<\/span>\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>Clive Brown and Urban Soul (CBUS)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A 20+ member collective led by this defining figure in British gospel music, renowned for his rich vocal arrangements and transformative performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Audiences will also hear words from\u00a0The Rt Revd Dr Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover;\u00a0Professor Georgina\u00a0Randsley\u00a0de Moura, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Kent; and students who have found sanctuary in Canterbury.\u00a0<strong>The concert will raise vital funds to support refugee and asylum-seeking students,<\/strong> helping them to rebuild their lives through education, integrate into the Kent community, and fulfil their potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"EN-GB\">\u2018This concert is a celebration of hope, resilience, and the power of music to bring people together,\u201d said\u00a0Professor\u00a0Randsley\u00a0de Moura.<strong> \u2018Every ticket sold helps change the story for students who have sought sanctuary here.\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/events\/voices-for-sanctuary-an-evening-of-gospel-music-at-canterbury-cathedral\/\">Tickets are available online from \u00a310.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gospel music comes to Canterbury Cathedral in Support of Refugee and Asylum-Seeking Students.
