To celebrate this month, we want to highlight the profound contributions to literature from Africa and the Caribbean in our <strong>Language &amp; Literature Hub. <\/strong>This complements our<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/2025\/09\/29\/black-history-month-2025-standing-firm-in-power-and-pride\/\">wider Black History Month Display<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in the Welcome Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Kent has had a thriving postcolonial studies research community from its inception. \u00a0It was the first University to offer a BA in African and Caribbean Studies. Unsurprisingly, the Templeman Library has a rich and varied collection of works written by authors from these regions.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Books<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our book collection includes many original editions from the <strong>African Writer Series<\/strong>. Published by\u00a0Heinemann, the series includes novels, poems and plays from authors across the continent, activists in the resistance against colonialism in their home countries. One of the first in published was the highly acclaimed <em>Things Fall Apart<\/em> by Chinua Achebe<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>We are also pleased to showcase the works of 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature Winner and Emeritus Professor Abdulrazak Gurnah, some of which were first drafted in the Templeman Library. For a full list of his works in the Library, browse our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rl.talis.com\/3\/kent\/lists\/6162813D-E107-D06F-37AD-524CFB01F738.html?lang=en-GB&amp;login=1\">resources list.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the Caribbean, we feature works from the <strong>Caribbean Writers Series<\/strong>, modelled on the success of the African series, as well as works that support our English Literature programmes and contemporary titles from the Love to Read collection.<\/p>\n<p>Browse our <a href=\"https:\/\/rl.talis.com\/3\/kent\/lists\/C737D511-F4CF-2188-7A61-AA1271B9C125.html?lang=en-GB&amp;login=1\"><strong>Caribbean &amp; African Literature Resource list<\/strong><\/a> to discover all of these books, ebooks and more.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Journals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Templeman Library provides access to online journals on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/browzine.com\/libraries\/2919\/subjects\/57\/bookcases\/77\/bookshelves\/229?sort=title\">African<\/a><\/strong> and Caribbean Literature. We also found print journals from Nigeria and Guyana published around the time of their struggles for independence. Amongst essays and commentaries on the challenges of the emerging states are poems and discussions about literature.<\/p>\n<p>These are exhibited alongside our book display for you to read and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-492\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/files\/2025\/09\/shared-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Special Collections<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our Special Collections &amp; Archives also have some fantastic literature from Africa and the Caribbean bequeathed by Emeritus Professor Louis James.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-471 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/files\/2025\/09\/LJ-coll.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/library\/special-collections\/louis-james-collection\"><strong>Louis James Collection<\/strong><\/a> contains more than 1000 books published from the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century right up to 2021. You can <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/librarysearch.kent.ac.uk\/client\/en_GB\/kent-archives\/search\/results?qu=louis+james+collection&amp;te=\">browse or search the whole collection<\/a><\/strong> and request any items to view in the reading room.
