Yom Kippur is the holiest and most solemn day of the year in Judaism, translating to the \u2018Day of Atonement\u2019. It occurs on the 10th day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What are the key observances?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A strict 25-to-26-hour fast from all food and water begins before sunset and ends after nightfall. Restrictions include abstaining from physical comforts, including bathing or washing, applying lotions or oils, wearing leather shoes, and marital relations. Attire includes wearing white clothing to symbolise purity and renewal. There are synagogue services which involve spending the majority of the day in extended prayer, starting with the Kol Nidrei service on the eve of the holiday and ending with the blowing of the shofar (a ram&#8217;s horn). Yom Kippur concludes with a festive meal shared with family and community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Which synagogues can I visit?\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of synagogues in Kent, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chathamshul.org.uk\/\"><strong>Chatham Memorial Synagogue<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/tdrs.org.uk\/\"><strong>Thanet and District Reform Synagogue<\/strong><\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montefioreendowment.org.uk\/sirmoses\/ramsgate\/\"><strong>Montefiore Synagogue and Mausoleum<\/strong><\/a> in Ramsgate.\u00a0Kent students can join the University\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ksu.co.uk\/activities\/jewish-soc\">Jewish Society (JSoc)<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ujs.org.uk\/join\">Union of Jewish Students (UJS)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We wish all our staff and students who are observing Yom Kippur a meaningful day!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is it and when does it take place?
