{"id":3151,"date":"2026-08-06T15:59:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/?p=3151"},"modified":"2026-08-06T15:59:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:59:47","slug":"shopping-for-essentials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/student-news\/2026\/08\/06\/shopping-for-essentials\/","title":{"rendered":"Shopping for Essentials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Members of our International Student Advisory Board have put together some helpful guides for adjusting to life in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>On this page \u2013 Supermarkets and buying groceries, Specialist Grocery shops and Household and Stationery Shops<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supermarkets and buying groceries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UK has several supermarket chains with different price ranges.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aldi.co.uk\/\">Aldi<\/a>\u00a0is the cheapest one and has two locations in Canterbury.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.waitrose.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOopA8ZOdOXeqd_IIXE_vSAEUrsnCzg1dhuua4MCiDqDqr0mlCFC8\">Waitrose<\/a>\u00a0is the most expensive one.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sainsburys.co.uk\/sol\/index.jsp\">Sainsbury\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/groceries.asda.com\/asda-webstore\/landing\/home.shtml?cmpid=ppc-_-ghs-_-brand-dsk-_-google-_-about%20asda\">ASDA<\/a>\u00a0are two of the biggest supermarkets in Canterbury. M&amp;S, Tesco, Sainsbury\u2019s Local and Waitrose are located in the city centre. We also have two Coop shops located on the University\u2019s Campus (Central Campus and Parkwood).<\/p>\n<p>Supermarkets such as Sainsbury\u2019s and Morrisons have a cheaper range of products. It is also common to find \u201cAldi price match\u201d stickers indicating that the price of that product is the same at Aldi.<\/p>\n<p>Supermarkets usually have international sections. Lidl (located in Herne Bay) and sometimes Aldi have weekly offers dedicated to foods from different countries.<\/p>\n<p>Supermarkets are usually open from 8am to 10pm Monday through Saturday. They are also open on Sundays and Bank holidays, but with restricted opening times<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Tips<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Loyalty and membership schemes<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Most supermarkets offer free membership schemes. You can log in and enjoy some discounts, and collect points interchangeably for money.<\/li>\n<li><em>Discounted products<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Look out for the yellow stickers in supermarkets. These are products sold at a reduced price because their best before date is approaching, but they are still safe to consume.<\/li>\n<li><em>Meal Deals<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Most supermarkets offer meal deals that include one main (a sandwich, or salad), one side (a bag of crisps or another snack) and a drink.<\/li>\n<li><em>Bring your own bags<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 There are bags available in the supermarket, but you will have to pay a small fee.<\/li>\n<li><em>Self Checkout tills<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Most supermarkets will have self-checkout tills (you scan and pack your own items). There is usually no internet connection in supermarkets.<\/li>\n<li><em>Online Delivery<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 It is possible to do your grocery shopping online and it will be delivered to your accommodation for a fee. It is possible to order items through online retailers and get things shipped on campus. If you\u2019d rather purchase in person, there are quite a few stores in town to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.argos.co.uk\/\"><strong>Argos<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0-&gt; provides a click and collect service. Buy your items online and collect at Sainsbury\u2019s in town. Carries appliances such as rice cookers, air fryers etc. (\u00a3) ~20 minute bus ride from campus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tesco<\/strong>\u00a0-&gt; has a small home section in store, providing good basics such as utensil sets and cleaning supplies. (\u00a3) ~15 minute bus ride from campus.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunelm.com\/\"><strong>Dunelm<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0-&gt; UK\u2019s leading home store. Shop for bedding, curtains, kitchen products, etc. (\u00a3\u00a3) ~ 30 minute bus ride from campus.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitefriars.co.uk\/shopping\/tiger\/\"><strong>Flying Tiger<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0-&gt; unique items including kitchen utensils, stationary, and other goods. (\u00a3) ~15 minute bus ride from campus.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliverbonas.com\/canterbury\"><strong>Oliver Bonas<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0-&gt; shop for homeware and gifts at this independent UK lifestyle store. (\u00a3\u00a3\u00a3) ~15 minute bus ride from campus<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryman.co.uk\/storefinder\/ryman-canterbury\/\"><strong>Ryman<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0-&gt; shop for affordable stationary items (and get things printed!), likely cheaper than options on Amazon. (\u00a3) ~15 minute ride from campus.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.primark.com\/en-gb\/stores\/canterbury\/marlowe-arcade\"><strong>Primark<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0-&gt; has a home section located on the top floor with bathroom and kitchen products.
