The University of Greenwich and University of Kent have today, Monday 3 August, confirmed that their merger has successfully completed as expected and the new London and South East University Group \u2013 to be known as LASE \u2013 is now an official legal entity.<\/p>\n

The official launch of the LASE University Group will be marked on Monday 7 September \u2013 exactly one year since the two universities announced their intention to formally explore a merger \u2013 with a special ceremonial moment that will be celebrated across all four campuses – Greenwich, Avery Hill, Medway and Canterbury.<\/p>\n

The new multi-university group, described as \u2018the UK\u2019s first super-university\u2019, is a first of its kind model \u2013 allowing the creation of the new university group whilst enabling the two universities to continue trading under their individual names with their distinct identities, courses, and local presence. It is designed to enable other universities to join in the future. Students will continue to apply to, study at, and graduate from the University of Greenwich or the University of Kent.<\/p>\n

The intention to merge was first announced in September 2025. Since then, there has been a year of intense activity to develop the blueprint, working closely with the Department for Education and Office for Students to gain approval for the unique model and navigate the complex regulatory landscape.<\/p>\n

A new Chancellor, governing body and senior executive team for LASE have been appointed and officially take up their roles today. Further integration work during the new group\u2019s founding years will continue to build on the strengths and opportunities of the two universities coming together.<\/p>\n

Professor Jane Harrington is the founding Vice-Chancellor and CEO of LASE, and is supported by a senior team including Professor Georgina Randsley de Moura as the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy CEO.<\/p>\n

Professor Jane Harrington said: \u201cI am absolutely delighted to confirm the launch of the new LASE University Group and I look forward to working with colleagues and with students at the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich.<\/p>\n

\u201cA massive thank you to everyone who has been involved in getting us to this point \u2013 there has been tireless work over the last year working to an ambitious timetable and developing a new university model that has never been done before. It means we are starting with a smooth transition, an extremely strong senior executive team and clear direction so that we can fulfil our potential as the UK\u2019s first super-university.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are looking forward to the official launch of LASE next month, so we will have much more to say then \u2013 and watch this space for a truly spectacular launch to mark the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
