Our next staff Kent Diamond is Sam Stevens. Sam is responsible for engaging as many students, staff and the local community as possible in sport and physical activity. Hear from Sam:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

My name is Sam Stevens. I am a Sports Development Coordinator in Kent Sport. I have been working in the role since March 2025. I also worked on a casual basis in the Sports Development team, while I was studying for my BSc Psychology here at the University of Kent. Between graduating and rejoining\u00a0Kent Sport, I worked in a secondary school coaching sport and leading sports activities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Away from work I enjoy being outdoors and active as much as I can.\u00a0A typical weekend for me would involve watching my team Gillingham inevitably lose, playing tennis with friends and enjoying a nice walk or cycle in the countryside or by the sea!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tell us about your role at Kent and how you make an impact.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a Sports Development Coordinator, my role is to engage as many students, staff, and members of the local community as possible in sport and physical activity. We have a clear mission of opening sport for all and aim to remove the barriers that individuals may face when getting involved.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My main responsibilities include leading the football programme for over 700 students and around 50 staff members, as well as coordinating the Vice-Chancellor\u2019s Cup staff sports competition. I also enjoy working on the\u00a0ALL Active\u00a0programme, which provides regular, social, relaxed, and low-cost sessions across a variety of sports throughout the week.\u00a0In the holiday times, we run multi-sport activity camps for children, which is great fun!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I am\u00a0passionate\u00a0about removing barriers to participation and helping people experience the physical and mental well-being benefits that sport can provide. It is rewarding to organise events and programmes that help the Kent community step away from their studies or work, make new friends, stay active, and\u00a0maintain\u00a0a healthy lifestyle.\u00a0As a former\u00a0student, I\u00a0have experienced how important these activities\u00a0are.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tell us about\u2026\u00a0Staff Varsity<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Staff Varsity<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0is an annual sports tournament between staff from the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.\u00a0The tournament was\u00a0stablished to provide staff with the opportunity to compete in a friendly and social sporting competition.\u00a0It has quickly become a highlight of the staff sports calendar, with many familiar faces\u00a0from our\u00a0ALL\u00a0Active\u00a0sessions and Vice-Chancellor\u2019s Cup competition coming together to\u00a0represent\u00a0Team Kent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s still time to get involved in Staff Varsity 2026!\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0been a great competition so far, with Team Kent claiming victory in golf and our cricketers putting in\u00a0a strong performance\u00a0despite\u00a0missing out on\u00a0the win. Staff have also taken part in boccia, dodgeball and badminton, with pickleball, football and rounders to come, followed by an awards and social evening. What are some of your favourite things about the University?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a former student and now staff member, I have always\u00a0loved the green campus. My\u00a0favourite\u00a0spot on campus is the lawn near Rutherford with the stunning view of the town and cathedral.\u00a0Being so close to the Crab and Winkle Way means you can easily head off for a walk or cycle down to Whitstable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a keen tennis player and footballer, it is\u00a0great\u00a0to have the indoor tennis centre and two fantastic football pitches at the doorstep of our office.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who helps make the Kent community special for you?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through my role,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0lucky\u00a0to\u00a0regularly see\u00a0so many colleagues from across the University. Seeing so many friendly faces at events like the VC\u2019s Cup\u00a0competition\u00a0always makes my week.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0wonderful to see staff enjoying some friendly competition while supporting one another\u00a0and I think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a great reflection of our friendly and welcoming community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What advice would you give to Kent students and staff?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Advice for students:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Make the most of your accommodation membership by taking advantage of the wide range of free sport and physical activity opportunities available throughout the year.\u00a0From weekly sessions to one-off events, there are plenty of fun ways to get involved, meet new people and stay active.\u00a0Highlights this year included the colour run\u00a0and regular archery tag events!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Advice for staff:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I would highly recommend coming along to\u00a0an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ALL Active<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0session and giving something new a try. Whether\u00a0you’re\u00a0sporty or not sporty at all, everyone is welcome, and our friendly team will help you get started.
