Attending university, especially in a new country, can feel exciting but also a little overwhelming.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0exactly why\u00a0<\/span>NexUS\u00a0International<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>was created.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NexUS\u00a0International<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is a student-staff collaboration with the International Student Advisory Board (ISAB)<\/a> <\/span>and Nexus Team<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It is a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>welcoming drop-in space for students to connect, unwind, and engage in informal conversations with no pressure and no expectations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"StudentsLaunched as part of WorldFest\u00a02026<\/a><\/span>, these\u00a0monthly\u00a0sessions\u00a0are\u00a0open\u00a0to everyone both international and home students. Whether you want to\u00a0chat, grab a snack, take a break from studying, or get creative with activities, you’re welcome to\u00a0drop in at\u00a0any time!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes\u00a0<\/span>NexUs\u00a0International<\/span><\/i>\u00a0different is that it was created\u00a0by students for students.\u00a0ISAB\u00a0members designed the space based\u00a0on their\u00a0experiences and\u00a0from feedback\u00a0from the Kent Student\u2019s Union International Student Voice research, which highlighted\u00a0how important\u00a0community\u00a0and connection\u00a0are, especially\u00a0for international students.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eya,\u00a0one of the ISAB members, shared:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs international students ourselves, we understand how difficult and isolating it can be to adjust to\u00a0a new environment, especially for people leaving home for the first time. That is why we created\u00a0NexUS\u00a0International to be an informal support space where students get to voice their concerns or feelings with someone who\u00a0truly\u00a0understands\u00a0what they are going through. The focus for these events for us was on the relaxed and approachable tone of the sessions, so students would feel at ease to share even everyday worries, such as feeling lonely or missing home.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cynthia,\u00a0from the Nexus team added,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBuilding on Nexus as a central support hub, the initiative extends its role beyond queries, providing a more accessible and informal way for students to engage with support and each other.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At\u00a0our recent\u00a0Mental Health Day<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0students got involved with\u00a0bracelet-making and\u00a0wrote\u00a0Kent 60<\/span>th<\/span> Anniversary\u00a0postcards\u00a0home. These were\u00a0activities\u00a0that opened meaningful\u00a0conversations\u00a0and helped students unwind as they headed into assessment week.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One student summed it up:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really nice to have a space where you can just talk and meet people who understand\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>your<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0experience.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
