The University of Kent is <\/span>collaborating with OpenAI<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to give all students and staff\u00a0free\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>ChatGPT Edu<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 a version of ChatGPT built for universities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed for the education sector, ChatGPT Edu offers\u00a0<\/span>enhanced privacy and information security\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and ensures that conversations and data are\u00a0retained\u00a0within the University and are\u00a0<\/span>not used to train OpenAI\u2019s models<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ChatGPT Edu gives you access to an\u00a0<\/span>enhanced version of ChatGPT compared to the free public service.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This includes higher usage limits, access to more capable AI models and features such as custom GPTs and larger context windows, which can improve the relevance and quality of responses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a student, you also\u00a0benefit\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>institution-wide access supported by training, guidance, and ongoing input from researchers and a dedicated AI team.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This means you are not just given a tool, but support to use it effectively, responsibly, and in ways that genuinely support your learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does this\u202fsupport my learning experience and\u202femployability?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Helping students to develop AI skills is a crucial responsibility for the University in terms of preparing our graduates for employment. AI literary is increasingly featured in employers\u2019 lists of requirements for applicants. By providing access to tools and the related training and support, we are ensuring both our students, and our staff are equipping themselves to be best placed for the workplaces of the future.<\/p>\n

By providing this tool to all students for free, we are helping\u202fto level\u202fthe\u202fplaying field for students using AI\u202f\u2013 ensuring that\u202feveryone can\u202fbenefit\u202ffrom the\u202fnew\u202ftechnology.<\/p>\n

What makes ChatGPT\u202fEdu\u202fdifferent to the free version?\u202fWhat do I get out of this as a student or staff member?\u202f<\/strong><\/h4>\n

ChatGPT Edu gives Kent students and staff access to an enhanced version of ChatGPT compared to the free public service. This includes higher usage limits, access to more capable AI models, and features such as custom GPTs and larger context windows, which can improve the relevance and quality of responses for your studies.<\/p>\n

As a student, you also benefit from institution-wide access supported by training, guidance, and ongoing input from researchers and a dedicated AI team. This means you are not just given a tool, but support to use it effectively, responsibly, and in ways that genuinely support your learning.<\/p>\n

How will you ensure fairness between students that do and\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fuse\u202fAI?\u202f<\/strong><\/h4>\n

All students will be supported\u202fto critically evaluate\u202fhow AI\u202fimpacts\u202ftheir subject area both at university and in the wider world. We\u202fremain\u202fcommitted to\u202facademic integrity and ensuring that\u202fno student is unfairly disadvantaged.\u202fThis is outlined in our AI Principles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By securing this partnership with OpenAI and offering ChatGPT Plus-level access to all students\u202fand staff,\u202fwe\u202fhope to\u202freduce the digital divide\u202fwe hope to\u202fproduce equity of access whilst on campus.<\/p>\n

How will you\u202fsupport\u202fall students\u202fto\u202fbenefit\u202ffrom AI?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The advantage of an institution-wide license is that all students will have access to an advanced AI tool to support their studies, removing barriers for those who may not be able to access the best-available version.<\/p>\n

Our dedicated\u202fAI@Kent\u202fteam have\u202fdeveloped a comprehensive\u202fstudent\u202ftraining module called \u201cDeveloping Your AI Literacy\u201d which covers all the key areas of\u202fAI in Higher Education including prompting, ethical questions, responsible use, future career development, and sustainability. This course is available for you for free as part of your studies and is taught by experts in the fields of education and AI.<\/p>\n

By giving\u202fthis training and\u202faccess to the tool to all students,\u202fwe hope to reduce the digital divide that can be present where not all students are able to afford premium tools.<\/p>\n

Will students\u202fbe required\u202fto\u202fdisclose\u202fuse\u202fof\u202fAI?\u202f<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Guidance on disclosure will\u202fbe dependent on your subject. The decisions made by your tutors\u202fare\u202fprovided as part of individual assessment instructions on Moodle.\u202fWe\u202fhave extensive guidance for\u202fappropriate use\u202fof AI in your studies as well as dedicated information on the use of our AI platform.\u202fSee the\u202fUsing Generative AI in your studies\u202fpage for further guidance and available training.\u202fPlease contact your school\u202fwith any questions about\u202fhow AI\u202fuse\u202fmay be integrated into your course.<\/p>\n

Will data be shared, and how is it protected? \u202f<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The university owns and controls staff and students’ data in ChatGPT Edu. OpenAI does not train on your data or conversations, and its models don\u2019t learn from your usage. Any data that you\u202fsubmit\u202fto ChatGPT cannot be viewed by other students or staff (outside of our\u202fstandard IT use policies to\u202fmonitor\u202ffor inappropriate use,\u202fto meet legal requirements or for safeguarding reasons), unless you choose to share a conversationchat or ProjectGPT with other users in your workspace.<\/p>\n

OpenAI encrypts all data at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+) between its customers and OpenAI, and between OpenAI and its service providers, and uses strict access controls to limit who can access data.<\/p>\n

How will students with disabilities benefit or be protected?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A key feature of AI tools is that they can provide support for diverse requirements that students may have in their studies. Students with specific needs remain in receipt of an Inclusive Learning Plan\u00a0 (ILP) that sets out those needs. One of Kent\u2019s principles for responsible use is to ensure it is used in ways that prevent bias and discrimination among any specific group, including students with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Discussions are ongoing with our Student Support and Wellbeing team with regard to any additional functionality that may be available to students with ILPs to support them in their studies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
