AI tools elicit strong reactions. Whatever your position on AI, it’s important to know exactly what AI does and how you can engage with Chat GPT Edu safely, securely, and responsibly.
Q: What is Chat GPT Edu?
- Chat GPT Edu is the educational version of Chat GPT, which is an Artificial Intelligence tool that allows you to generate prompts and carry out work such as deeper research, data analysis, document summarisation, and more.
- However, instead of the standard version of Chat GPT, this is designed for institutions, meaning it’s more secure and workspace data is not used to train models.
You can find out more about the Edu version and ask further questions at the ChatGPT Edu Live @ Kent event on 18 Nov or the AI Town Hall on 11 Nov.
Q: Do I have to use AI?
- The University does not mandate AI for students or for staff. Your tutors are best placed to advise on if and how AI should be used and discussed on your course using their experience and expertise.
Q: Do your tutors or other staff monitor prompts?
- Tutors and staff cannot see your prompts. However, you should be aware that limited technical staff can access data if there is a legal reason to do so, under senior management authority.
Q: Does ChatGPT Edu train their models with your prompts and data?
- Unlike the traditional or free versions of Chat GPT, the Edu version does not train models based on workspace data. You’ll be able to get help with prompts and how to better use the tool at the ChatGPT Edu Live @ Kent event on 18 Nov.
Q: Why does Kent have an AI tool?
- AI is already extremely present in our society, and while we’re not pro or anti-AI, we are serious about offering all students the opportunity to use a safer and more secure tool should they want to use AI.
Q: How much does Chat GPT Edu cost?
- Nothing, it’s completely free to all students and staff.
Q: How do you sign up for Chat GPT Edu?
- To sign up for Chat GPT Edu you’ll need to complete a short module on how to use it and to learn more about what it can offer you. When you’ve done that, within 24 hours you’ll have access to the software.
Q: Who do you go to if you’re concerned about AI?
- If you’re unsure about the use of AI in Kent, or want to learn more before you sign up, you can take part in the AI Town Hall on 11 Nov or head to the ChatGPT Edu Live @ Kent event on 18 Nov to learn everything you need to know about the software. It’s aimed at sceptics, complete beginners, and experts alike to give you the full details on AI at uni. Alternatively, you can speak to your tutors, check out more support, or contact the AI Team by emailing: AITeam@kent.ac.uk.
