Our top gym etiquette for a safe, tidy, and respectful gym

Be a gym hero! Everyone wants to exercise safely in a clean and tidy space. Here are our top three tips to support yourself and others while exercising:

Safe: Use equipment correctly and report hazards.

Tidy: Wipe equipment and put everything away.

Respectful: Share equipment and respect other members.

A safe, tidy, and respectful gym is everyone’s responsibility. By following the below etiquette, we can all make sure that the gym is as inclusive to all members as possible.

  1. Wipe down equipment after use. Clean benches, machines, and mats with the provided antibacterial spray and blue paper roll.
  2. Put weights back where they belong. Remove weight plates from barbells and machines after use and return to their racks. Return dumbbells, kettlebells, and bars to their designated racks.
  3. Keep walkways clear. Do not leave bags, bottles, towels, or equipment where people could trip over them.
  4. Share equipment fairly. Avoid sitting on machines while using your phone, and allow others to work in between sets.
  5. Use equipment safely. Follow instructions, use correct technique, and ask for help if you are unsure.
  6. Wear suitable gym clothing and footwear. Choose appropriate clothing and supportive trainers for safe exercise (Sliders/Crocs and jeans are not appropriate for exercise).
  7. Respect fellow gym users. Give others enough room to exercise without bumping into them. Be polite, avoid unwanted comments. Avoid excessive shouting, loud conversations, and dropping weights unnecessarily.
  8. Bring a towel and water bottle. Keep personal items organised and clean up any spills immediately.
  9. Report damaged equipment. Inform gym staff about broken machines, loose cables, or other hazards. Do not use faulty equipment and report any damaged equipment to Kent Sport staff.
  10. Follow gym rules and staff instructions. Respect safety signs, equipment limits, and designated areas.
  11. Be mindful of hygiene. Wash your hands, use clean clothing, and avoid visiting the gym if you are feeling unwell.
  12. Return shared accessories. Put resistance bands, skipping ropes, mats, and other accessories back after use.
  13. Ask for photo and video permission. Speak to a member of Kent Sport staff before filming or photographing yourself and others and make sure you get consent from everyone in your filming and photos (including the background).
