Staying safe at university

University is a chance to enjoy new experiences and meet new people. A few simple habits can help keep you, your friends and your belongings safe.

Know how to get help

Campus Security is available 24 hours a day for safety advice, first aid, building access, lost property and security assistance. Save these numbers now:

  • Emergency: 01227 823333
  • Non-emergency: 01227 823300

Call 999 if there is immediate danger to life, violence or a crime happening now. For police non-emergencies, call 101 or report online.

Download SafeZone

SafeZone is the University safety app. You can use it to request security, safety or first-aid assistance, receive campus notifications and use Check In when working alone. On Connected Routes, it can share your location with the University security control room so they can offer support.

Keep your home, belongings and money safe

  • Lock doors and windows whenever you leave, and do not let strangers into secure buildings.
  • Keep valuables out of sight, record serial numbers and lock your bike securely.
  • Pause before you click, buy or send money. Never share passwords, PINs or security codes after an unexpected call or message.
  • Take extra care with accommodation deposits, tickets, online marketplaces and job offers.

Plan your night out and journey home

Make a plan with friends before you go out. Keep your phone charged, let someone know where you are and use licensed taxis or sign up to our Student Safe Taxi scheme. Campus Security can walk with you across campus using our Walking Taxi service.

Avoid isolated shortcuts, follow the Connected Routes and if something doesn’t feel right, get somewhere safe like these Refuge Points and ask for help.

Drink spiking can happen and it is a crime. The responsibility and fault is always with the person spiking a drink. It is never your fault if your drink has been spiked. If someone becomes much more unwell or intoxicated than expected, tell venue staff, get somewhere safe and stay together. If someone is seriously unwell or in immediate danger, call 999.

At participating venues, you can Ask for Angela if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Staff can help you find friends, arrange safe transport or contact security.

Report abuse, harassment or hate

If you experience or witness abuse, harassment or hate, you can report anonymously or ask for support through Report and Support. Asking for support does not automatically start a formal complaint. Student Support and Wellbeing have a Specialist Wellbeing team providing practical support and advice to anyone needing it.

Look after each other

Save the key numbers, download SafeZone and check in on your mates. Looking out for one another helps keep our whole community safe.
