GOLD 2026 Celebration: A Year of Leadership, Learning and Impact

Students discover what they’re capable of through GOLD.

Students from across the University recently came together to celebrate the successful completion of the Global Officers Leadership Development (GOLD) Programme and Global Leadership Development module, marking the end of another inspiring year of personal growth, leadership development and community impact.

This year, 52 students successfully completed the programme, joining a growing community of GOLD alumni, while many more engaged in workshops, events and projects or will continue their GOLD journey next year, meaning the programme’s impact extends well beyond those receiving certificates at the celebration event.

The celebration event provided an opportunity to reflect on everything participants have achieved over the past academic year and to recognise the contributions they have made to creating a welcoming, inclusive and globally connected University community.

Making a Difference Across Campus

Throughout the year, GOLD participants have played an important role in supporting student life at Kent. From welcoming new students during September and January arrivals to helping deliver Global Hangouts, cultural celebrations, food festivals, quizzes, city tours, campus tours and community-building activities, students have demonstrated a commitment to helping others feel connected and supported.

Participants also worked alongside colleagues from the Global Experience Team, Kent Students’ Union, Kent Sport, Careers and Employability Services and community partners, contributing to a wide range of initiatives including sustainability projects, WorldFest, the Colour Run, Clothes Swap events, Dress for Success and volunteering activities.

Many students also took part in optional development opportunities throughout the year, including workshops, cultural activities and the annual Student Global Leadership Conference in London. Following a competitive selection process, ten Global Officers attended the conference, with four students presenting their own ideas and experiences to an international audience.

Learning Through Experience

While the activities and events are central to the programme, many students identify reflection as one of the most valuable parts of their GOLD journey.

Across this year’s reflections, common themes emerged around increased confidence, greater self-awareness, stronger communication skills and a deeper understanding of both themselves and others.

One student reflected that a leadership programme should not seek to change who you are, but rather expand what you believe you are capable of.

That sentiment captures the heart of the GOLD Programme. Rather than creating a single model of leadership, the programme encourages students to discover their own strengths, step beyond their comfort zones and develop the confidence to navigate unfamiliar situations and diverse environments.

Developing Cultural Intelligence

A central part of the programme is developing Cultural Intelligence (CQ), the capability to work and relate effectively across different cultural contexts.

Through workshops and discussions exploring cultural identity, intercultural communication and global leadership, students are encouraged to challenge assumptions, reflect on their perspectives and learn how to engage positively with difference.

These experiences help participants develop skills that are increasingly valued by employers, including communication, adaptability, empathy, collaboration and leadership.

Student reflections highlighted the lasting impact the programme has had on their personal and professional development. Many spoke about broadening their perspectives, building empathy and confidence, and developing meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds. Several described the experience as transformative, with some saying it had influenced their future career aspirations and encouraged them to think more globally about the impact they want to have in the world.

Reflecting on their experience, one participant shared:

“The GOLD Programme helped me become more confident in myself and my abilities. It encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, work with people from different backgrounds and see challenges as opportunities for growth.”

And another said:

“The programme has broadened my worldview through meaningful listening and reflection, helping me to better understand both our differences and similarities. This has supported me in developing greater respect and empathy for other perspectives.”

Joining the GOLD Alumni Community

Whether graduating this summer, continuing their studies or preparing for their next adventure, students leave the programme with much more than a certificate.

They become part of a growing community of GOLD alumni who continue to draw on the experiences, friendships and skills developed through the programme long after they leave Kent.

The lasting impact of the programme can be seen in the experiences of this year’s cohort, many of whom described the programme as transformative and spoke about the influence it has had on their confidence, leadership development and future aspirations.

To all of this year’s participants: thank you for everything you have contributed to the University community. Your willingness to step forward, support others and embrace new experiences has made a real difference.

Congratulations to the GOLD Class of 2026 – we look forward to seeing where your journeys take you next.
