Egypt’s Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in Egyptian Cinema

Lupino Cinema, 30 April (6-7.45pm)

Join us for an encounter with Haytham Fathy, the author of the book Gay Men in Egyptian Cinema: Censorship, Visibility, and Stereotypes, and for a screening of his documentary Egypt’s Celluloid Closet (50 minutes).

Haytham’s work offers the first comprehensive study of the representation of gay men in Egyptian cinema, tracing how these portrayals have emerged, shifted, and been contested across different historical and political moments.

Haytham Fathy is a London-based Egyptian filmmaker and film scholar. He holds a PhD in Film, Television, and Media from the University of East Anglia, UK and an MA in Screen Directing from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

This event will take place at the Lupino Cinema on 30 April, 6-7.45pm.
