Finding your space at Kent: NexUS International

Attending university, especially in a new country, can feel exciting but also a little overwhelming. That’s exactly why NexUS International was created.

NexUS International is a student-staff collaboration with the International Student Advisory Board (ISAB) and Nexus TeamIt is a welcoming drop-in space for students to connect, unwind, and engage in informal conversations with no pressure and no expectations.

Students chatting and making braceletsLaunched as part of WorldFest 2026, these monthly sessions are open to everyone both international and home students. Whether you want to chat, grab a snack, take a break from studying, or get creative with activities, you’re welcome to drop in at any time!

What makes NexUs International different is that it was created by students for students. ISAB members designed the space based on their experiences and from feedback from the Kent Student’s Union International Student Voice research, which highlighted how important community and connection are, especially for international students.

Eya, one of the ISAB members, shared:

“As international students ourselves, we understand how difficult and isolating it can be to adjust to a new environment, especially for people leaving home for the first time. That is why we created NexUS International to be an informal support space where students get to voice their concerns or feelings with someone who truly understands what they are going through. The focus for these events for us was on the relaxed and approachable tone of the sessions, so students would feel at ease to share even everyday worries, such as feeling lonely or missing home.”

Cynthia, from the Nexus team added,

“Building on Nexus as a central support hub, the initiative extends its role beyond queries, providing a more accessible and informal way for students to engage with support and each other.”

At our recent Mental Health Day, students got involved with bracelet-making and wrote Kent 60th Anniversary postcards home. These were activities that opened meaningful conversations and helped students unwind as they headed into assessment week.

One student summed it up:

“It’s really nice to have a space where you can just talk and meet people who understand your experience.”

If you are looking for a place to connect, take a break or even just a quick hello, NexUs International is here for you.
