Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent is the 40 days building up to Easter and was traditionally a time of fasting. On Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were absolved from their sins. Shrove Tuesday takes place today, on Tuesday 17 February! The day always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday.

Pancakes have traditionally been eaten in Britain on Shrove Tuesday, as far back as 16th century, to use up tempting rich, fatty foods, such as eggs, milk, and sugar before Lent. If you would like to enjoy pancakes at the Canterbury Campus today, breakfast pancakes are available in Mungo’s all day for one day only! However, you can also get waffles at the Gulbenkian café!
