Mahayana New Year

Mahayana New Year is a diverse celebration for Mahayana Buddhists, representing new beginnings and fresh starts. It takes place on the first full moon in January, which is Saturday 3 January. However, some people celebrate Mahayana New Year on 1 January, while others follow the Lunar Chinese New Year, focusing on meditation, reflection, temple visits, offering prayers/candles to Buddha, and acts of kindness for spiritual growth.

Traditions vary by region, blending quiet devotion with festive community events like feasts and cleaning homes for good fortune. Common traditions include celebrating with light, such as fireworks, candles or lanterns, to bring in an optimistic New Year. Dharma activities include reading Sutra. Whilst Buddhists celebrate different New Year dates around the world, traditions of warm wishes of good fortune and celebration are common amongst all of them.

There are events and groups you can get involved with in Kent including classes and study groups hosted by the East Kent Buddhist Group, Bodhicharya Kent, and Kent Chan Group. There is also a weekend retreat being hosted by the Kadampa Meditation Centre in Kent.

We wish all students and staff a Happy New Year, with good fortune, health, and happiness!
