What is it?
White Ribbon Day is a yearly international campaign to end violence against women and girls. It encourages individuals and organisations to take positive action against gender-based violence by challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours that lead to this. Wearing a white ribbon symbolises a commitment to ending violence against women and girls and marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
When does it take place?
This year the theme for White Ribbon Day is ‘We Speak Up’ and it takes place on Tuesday 25 November.
How can I learn more?
The White Ribbon movement began in 1991 and you can find out more about it by visiting the White Ribbon website. There are also student training modules you can review, such as Kent’s Consent Training. You can also find out more about events at Kent you can join.
What can I do?
You can find out on the White Ribbon website ways to offer support such as being an ally, becoming an ambassador or champion, and fundraising. There are many national charities you can support, including Women’s Aid, Refuge, and The Fawcett Society. There are also local charities in Kent that you can support, such as Rising Sun Domestic Violence & Abuse Charity.
What University groups or networks are there?
Kent Students’ Union have a number of societies and networks you can join, including the Women’s Network, the Women in Business Society, the Women in Politics Society, and the Womxn in STEM Society.
How do I report an incident?
You can report an incident such as harassment or bullying through Report + Support. You can either make a named report and speak to an adviser or give an anonymous report.
