Partly this is because of the\u00a0digitisation and digital transfer work we have been\u00a0doing for preservation and access reasons, but it is also because some deposits have been\u00a0born-digital. Because of the challenge of managing, preserving and accessing digital material\u00a0we have been experimenting with different tools to help us manage our digital files more easily. \u00a0Hope you find these useful too, and please let us know if you have any great digital preservation tools you&#8217;ve been using!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Embedding metadata<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitizationguidelines.gov\/audio-visual\/documents\/help_home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">BWF Metaedit<\/span><\/a> \u2013 for embedding metadata into wave files (it has a batch processing tool which is nice)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mp3tag.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MP3tag<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; for embedding metadata into mp3 files (either files deposited in the archive as mp3 or in mp3 access copies we are generating)<\/li>\n<li>Adobe Bridge &#8211; for embedding metadata within image files (ditto with regards the batch processing feature\u00a0mentioned above).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>File Format Identification<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/information-management\/manage-information\/policy-process\/digital-continuity\/file-profiling-tool-droid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">DROID<\/span><\/a> \u2013 The National Archives\u2019 tool for profiling file types (for finding out what files you are accessioning\u00a0e.g. what version of jpeg you have). It can also create hash sums (checksums)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Moving files<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blackbush \u2013 a checksum\u00a0tool generating MD5 hash files developed for the British Library\u2019s Sound Archive. This is great as it also moves files and folders for you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disc Imaging<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.isobuster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISOBuster<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; for creating disc images. We&#8217;ve used this for creating images of floppy disks and DVDs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Renaming files<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rlvision.com\/flashren\/about.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flash renamer<\/a> &#8211; useful for renaming files in bulk! We&#8217;ve used this, for example, when digitisation has been outsourced and a temporary filename was given by the contractor.
