Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland – 29 and 30 November

Take a trip down the rabbit hole this Friday and Saturday (29-30 November) and have a magical time at the University of Kent Players Radio Theatre’s production of Alice in Wonderland.

The Players are taking over Mungo’s to bring you a live radio play with actors performing various parts and a live foley creating sound effects.

Book your tickets now, priced £6.50 for general admission and £6.00 for concessions, via the Eventbrite website.

The University of Kent Players are entirely self-funded and the only money available for productions comes from ticket sales, membership fees and any donations. So they need as many people as possible to come along and support their productions. Your support is appreciated!

Thinking about an LLM? Drop in for pizza and an informal chat!

Students across all degree disciplines with an interest in studying a Master’s degree in law are invited to drop in to the Law School’s ‘Open House’ event on Thursday 5 December.

Law School staff and students will be welcoming visitors to the Eliot Extension foyer between 12pm and 2pm, offering students an informal opportunity to explore their options, to learn more about the Kent LLM and to enjoy a free slice of pizza! It also offers an opportunity to chat about funding options; the University has a generous postgraduate scholarship fund in excess of £12m available to taught and research students studying at Kent and we can talk to you about a range of scholarships, bursaries and loans.

Later that day, Kent Law School staff and students will also be attending the University’s Postgraduate Open Event from 5pm – 7pm in Darwin Conference Suite – a further opportunity to explore your postgraduate options in law!

The Kent LLM attracts excellent law graduates from around the world and is also open to non-law graduates who wish to develop an advanced understanding of law in their field.

Students have the opportunity to develop specialisms in a host of subject areas including: Criminal Justice; Environmental Law; European Law; Intellectual Property Law; International Commercial Law; International Criminal Justice; International Environmental Law; International Law with International Relations; International Law; Law and the Humanities; Medical Law and Ethics; and Human Rights Law. The innovative nature of the programme means that students have the option to leave their choice of specialism open until after they arrive, with their specialisms being determined by the modules that they select.

Details of modules are available on our website and an insight into the student experience can be gained by reading the Mastering Law blog.

HR seminar

5th Annual HR Conference draws sector professionals to Kent

The fifth annual HR Conference last week welcomed just under one hundred HR professionals and sector workers to the University of Kent. The event took place at the Canterbury campus and the aim was to learn about and share their thoughts on wellbeing in the workplace.

The event is facilitated by the University’s business and innovation gateway, Kent Innovation and Enterprise, and this year’s sponsors were KIMS Hospital. The goal was to provide businesses and individuals with the knowledge to effectively look after employees and themselves, as well as spread awareness on methods and programmes one can use when struggling with stress and anxiety.

Wellbeing engagement and interaction was high, thanks to our brilliant speakers, and the interactive wall by Wellbeing People. The day included talks from academics as well as leaders in wellbeing from the local business community.

Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the work of the DICE

The University has been awarded a highly prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for the work of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE). The official announcement took place at St James’s Palace on Thursday 21 November 2019.

The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes are awarded, within the honours system, for exceptional contributions by institutions in the higher and further education sectors and will be presented by The Queen at Buckingham Palace on 20 February 2020.

Since its foundation, DICE has been a leader in its field, and instrumental in supporting applied research and capacity building in this area. It is the largest UK higher education institute to undertake this work, offering interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate courses in wildlife conservation. To date, over 1000 conservationists from over a 100 countries have trained with DICE.

Professor Karen Cox, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University, said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that DICE should receive such an accolade. It is a much-deserved tribute to the exceptional work of its students, staff and alumni and the outstanding contribution they make to global conservation.’

Professor Bob Smith, Director of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, said: ‘We are very honoured to receive such a prestigious award. The Prize acknowledges the hard work that has taken place over the last 30 years, and will support our future endeavours as we seek to grow our impact across the globe.’

DICE leads projects in over 50 countries, including research on human wellbeing and nature, human-elephant conflict, oil palm deforestation, online illegal trade in protected species, national park planning and ecotourism projects and the mapping of biodiversity through eDNA. This work is supported by funding from a range of sources including NERC, Natural England, the government’s Darwin Initiative and the Global Challenges Research Fund, part of the UK’s official development assistance.

This award is the third Queen’s Anniversary Prize to be presented to the University, with previous awards recognising the work of the Kent Law Clinic and the Tizard Centre.
