Welcome to all our new and returning School of Social Sciences (SSS) students! We thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to introduce you to your SSS Head of School Dr Balihar Sanghera. Take a look at the interview below to find out more about Balihar and their role at Kent.
Can you tell us a bit about your journey to becoming Head of School?
During my 21 years at the University of Kent, I have occupied a variety of roles. Becoming Head of School is almost expected for senior members. Nevertheless, it is a privilege to serve as Head of School, representing and advocating for the interests of students and staff, and planning and strategizing for their well-being.
What are your top priorities for the school this academic year and why?
To ensure students have an excellent teaching and learning experience and have a sense of belonging in our School. Students are central to our activities and practices, and we will provide them opportunities to pursue their passions and interests, achieve their goals and ambitions, and become critical thinkers and future leaders.
What are you most proud of in your school, and are there any specific achievements?
My colleagues in the School are hard-working, dedicated and caring. They are passionate about teaching, obtaining a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from highly engaged students. Moreover, they conduct world-leading research, which ensures that our students are part of the development of innovative knowledge and social science. As a School, our proudest moments are when students graduate, having successfully achieved their goals at Kent and are ready for the next stage in their lives.
What is the one thing that students might be surprised to learn about you?
Before coming to Kent, I spent four years teaching economics and sociology at the Novosibirsk State University, Russia and the American University-Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan. I occasionally travel to Central Asia to research the nature and development of post-Soviet political, economic and social structures and practices.
What’s your favourite spot on campus and why?
The library is a place of wonder and amazement, filling me with awe and excitement whenever I enter or walk past it. It houses knowledge from around the world on disciplines in the humanities and natural and social sciences. It is also a place for creating knowledge, as students and staff use its facilities to advance our understanding of the world.
Is there a student success story that has inspired you in your career as Head of School?
Each student comes to university with their own unique story, overcoming and navigating personal challenges, obstacles and constraints. Each struggle for education is inspiring. Each journey is meaningful and transformative. Students who face multiple challenges, including familial, economic and cultural, are truly inspiring.
What one piece of advice would you give students during their time at University to maximise their academic success this year?
Attend classes and ask questions. The university offers a wonderful opportunity to learn, develop and be creative, so make the most of your time here. If you are experiencing difficulties and problems, contact staff and seek advice and support. We are here to help and ensure your success.
