{"id":766,"date":"2014-06-05T07:56:26","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T07:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/tizard-news-events\/?p=766"},"modified":"2014-06-05T07:56:26","modified_gmt":"2014-06-05T07:56:26","slug":"living-in-fear-parliamentary-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/2014\/06\/05\/living-in-fear-parliamentary-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Living in Fear &#8211; Parliamentary Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday 12th May 2014\u00a0along with project advisors Rob Marno, Allan Finn and Kathy Johnson,\u00a0 Lisa Richardson from the Tizard centre and\u00a0 Colin Guest project manager from MCCH attended a Joint meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Learning Disability, where they presented a summary of the findings and recommendations of the Living in Fear research project\u00a0 and described the Jigsaw project.\u00a0\u00a0The project is\u00a0currently being supported by \u00a0Kent Police and Medway Council\u00a0who are <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/tizard-news-events\/files\/2014\/06\/lif_lr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-767\" alt=\"lif_lr\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/tizard-news-events\/files\/2014\/06\/lif_lr-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/files\/2014\/06\/lif_lr-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/files\/2014\/06\/lif_lr-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/files\/2014\/06\/lif_lr.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0piloting\u00a0 some of the key research recommendations in Medway, with participation from police officers, schools, transport, healthcare and public service providers.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcch.org.uk\/livinginfear\/index.aspx\">http:\/\/www.mcch.org.uk\/livinginfear\/index.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kent Police, who were partners in this three year Big Lottery funded research project were also represented by DCI Andy Pritchard and Superintendent Andy Rabey.\u00a0 David Quirke-Thornton, Deputy Director of Medway Council\u2019s Children and Adult Services also attended.<\/p>\n<p>The briefing was chaired by Robert Buckland MP and Lord Rix.\u00a0 First-hand accounts of disability hate crime were heard from Kevin Healey (an anti-bullying campaigner) and Richard Lawrence from Mencap.\u00a0 A response and discussion session with Norman Baker MP and Minister for Crime Prevention followed.\u00a0 The Minister identified two main routes to address hate crime: legal action and changing attitudes.\u00a0\u00a0 He felt that police and public attitudes and understanding of hate crime \u2013 particularly against those with learning disabilities or autism &#8211; need to change.
