{"id":6061,"date":"2022-06-21T13:00:39","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/?p=6061"},"modified":"2022-06-21T13:00:39","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T12:00:39","slug":"dr-sweta-rajan-rankin-awarded-1-5m-for-future-leaders-fellowship-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/2022\/06\/21\/dr-sweta-rajan-rankin-awarded-1-5m-for-future-leaders-fellowship-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Sweta Rajan-Rankin awarded \u00a31.5M for Future Leaders Fellowship project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senior Lecturer and inter-disciplinary scholar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/social-policy-sociology-social-research\/people\/1953\/rajan-rankin-sweta\">Dr Sweta Rajan-Rankin<\/a>, has been awarded a remarkable sum of money from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/about-us\/\">UK Research and Innovation<\/a> (UKRI) in the latest round of \u00a0Future Leaders Fellowships awards.<\/p>\n<p>Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) provide long-term support to talented early career researchers, enabling them to tackle major global issues, and to develop and commercialise innovators\u2019 new business ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Rajan-Rankin\u2019s project entitled \u201cHair and Care\u201d provides a ground breaking examination of the socio-material contexts of racialised belonging by exploring how Black hair is curated, manifested, disciplined and experienced by children and young people in social care and education settings.<\/p>\n<p>The FLF will enable Sweta to develop a new field of inquiry on race, new materialisms and social work and generate real world impact in tackling racial inequalities in social care and education settings in England.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the accolade, Dr Rajan-Rankin said: \u201cSocial work research traditionally doesn&#8217;t have many post-doctoral opportunities, and while inter-disciplinarity can be a strength, it can also be difficult to find one&#8217;s niche when applying to mainstream funding bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UKRI FLF is life-changing for me because it recognises the value of inter-disciplinary thinking and liminal imagination and enables me to examine systemic racism in boundlessly creative ways. I am exceptionally grateful for the outstanding mentoring opportunities available through the FLF and for belonging to this incredibly talented community of scholars.
