The University\u2019s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen Cox, will open the event with a welcome speech before the talks begin regarding philanthropy\u2019s impact on Covid-19 research, NHS relief and rebuilding healthcare charities.<\/p>\n<p>The event sessions include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research: The role of philanthropy in funding treatment, cures and vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chair:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/social-policy-sociology-social-research\/people\/564\/breeze-beth\">Dr Beth Breeze<\/a>, Director, Centre for Philanthropy, University of Kent<\/p>\n<p>Speaker: Paul Ramsbottom OBE, CEO of the Wolfson Foundation \u2013 on how they approach what to fund in the health sphere and why they were funding infectious disease and vaccine research in advance of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relief: Captain Sir Tom Moore and the NHS Charities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chair: Professor John Mohan, Director, Third Sector Research Centre, University of Birmingham<\/p>\n<p>Speakers: Adrian Beney and Rachel Hall of More Partnerships, who supported NHS Charities Together \u2013 on the inside story of coping with the incredible public response not only to Sir Tom Moore\u2019s fundraising, which raised more than \u00a332 million, but also the other \u00a3100 million that was given, and explaining why and how the NHS uses charitable donations for the benefit of staff and patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebuilding: Health care charities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chair: Dr Jurgen Grotz, Director, Institute for Volunteering Research, University of East Anglia<\/p>\n<p>Speakers: Dr Helen Bowcock, Chair of Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex, and Lydia Todd, Challenge events fundraiser, Pilgrims Hospices \u2013 on how their organisations interact with the NHS, their reliance on private support and the challenge faced in fundraising during the pandemic and going forward.<\/p>\n<p>The open to all event is supported by the Pears Foundation and organised in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kmms.ac.uk\/\">Kent and Medway Medical School<\/a>, The Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) \u2013 University of Birmingham, University of East Anglia and the University of Kent\u2019s Civil Society research cluster.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals can register to attend via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/philanthropy-in-health-care-research-before-during-after-the-pandemic-tickets-144502044505\">Eventbrite<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SSPSSR&#8217;s Centre for Philanthropy\u00a0is holding an online event to critically analyse the role of philanthropy in healthcare and research.
