{"id":4736,"date":"2019-05-22T09:01:41","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T08:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/?p=4736"},"modified":"2019-05-22T09:02:19","modified_gmt":"2019-05-22T08:02:19","slug":"honorary-degree-award-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr-news-events\/2019\/05\/22\/honorary-degree-award-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Honorary Degree Award 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are delighted to announce that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions-uk.org\/news-blog-post\/national-hate-crime-awareness-week-2017-mark-brookes\/\">Mark Brookes<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0is to be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Kent at its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/kentlife\/22111\/singer-ellie-goulding-among-those-to-receive-honorary-degrees-from-kent\">graduation ceremonies in July\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 Mark, who works for Dimensions as a Campaign Advisor,\u00a0is an advocate and campaigner for people with learning disabilities who has particularly focused his energy on seeking to counter the hate crime and harassment so often targeted at people with learning disabilities. As a man with learning disabilities himself he is able to speak as an expert by experience. The award of an honorary degree signifies the University&#8217;s clear view that the insights, experience and practices of people with learning disabilities, like Mark, are of value and their contribution should be recognised in an academic environment.
