Eric Emerson, Professor of Disability\u00a0and Health Research\u00a0at Lancaster University gave our final Research Seminar for this academic year.\u00a0 “Improving the health and lives of people with learning disabilities:\u00a0 The Learning Disabilities Public Health Observatory”.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Following the publication of Michael’s Report into inequalities in access to health care, the Department of Health established a specialist public health observatory on learning disabilities for England.\u00a0 Prof Emerson’s talk looked at the rationales that lie behind the Observatory’s work and reviewed its progress to date.\u00a0 Concluding that people with learning disabilities continue to face significant levels of health inequality, which are to an extent avoidable and that existing information systems are still not sufficient to support effective commissioning.\u00a0 Commenting that a continuing public health focus on learning disability would add significantly to current policy and practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n
