Street culture, social control and the norms of the excluded\u2019 at the Kent Law School staff seminar on Wednesday 11 March .<\/p>\n<p>The paper reflects on \u2018street culture\u2019: the values, norms, styles, practices and behaviours particularly associated with the poorest sections of the urban disadvantaged. It argues that not only do such socio-economic positions contribute to a particular normativity which is associated with crime and violence, but that the marks of this position are read as such by agents of social control.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ilan&#8217;s book \u2018Understanding Street Culture: Poverty, crime, youth and cool\u2019 will be published next month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SSPSSR&#8217;s Director of Studies for BA Criminology, Dr Jonathan Ilan, will be presenting a paper entitled \u2018\u2026 Another Law for the Poor\u2019?
