There are over 6 million unpaid family carers in the UK\u00a0 supporting a relative (or a friend) with a long term disability or condition. Whilst carers are all individuals in different situations, the majority of carers are\u00a0 either mid life women (many of whom give up their jobs to provide care) looking after their frail parents\/in law, older spouses caring for a partner, or\u00a0 parents supporting a\u00a0 child with a learning and\/or physical disability.\u00a0There are also a growing group of young carers supporting a parent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Dr Alisoun Milne\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr\/staff\/academic\/milne.html\">Dr Alisoun Milne<\/a>, from the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent, is one of the leads on an ESRC seminar series\u00a0 entitled <a title=\"Carers in the 21st Century\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmu.ac.uk\/research\/research-faculties-and-institutes\/health-and-life-sciences\/participation--social-justice\/carers-in-the-21st-century-developing-the-evidence-base.aspx\">&#8216;Carers in the 21st Century&#8217;<\/a>.\u00a0 The series of 4 seminars run from October 2012 to September 2013 and aim to make a key\u00a0 contribution to the development of a coherent evidence base that can be used to develop policy, services and interventions that improve carers\u2019 quality of life and those they support.\u00a0 Participants include\u00a0 researchers, carers,\u00a0 practitioners, policy makers, and representatives from the third sector.\u00a0 Further details, including materials from the first two seminars\u00a0 are also <a title=\"Carers in the 21st Century\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmu.ac.uk\/research\/research-faculties-and-institutes\/health-and-life-sciences\/participation--social-justice\/carers-in-the-21st-century-developing-the-evidence-base.aspx\">available<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The week of June 10th-16th is National Carers Week.
