Peter Taylor-Gooby is presenting the concluding keynote at the German Association for the Study of British History and Politics annual conference in Dusseldorf on 19 May. The conference debates the resurgence of liberalism in British public life. He will present findings from his recent research on the way in which people think about equality and fairness in Germany and the UK. The work shows that while equality is valued as an essential component of social justice in both countries, UK citizens are much more likely to describe a society where there is a large gap between rich and poor as fair, provided all positions are open to everyone.
