Free Webinar 9 June: Push and pull factors of online grooming

By | 05 June 2020

This is our second free webinar looking at ‘Push and pull factors of online grooming’. The first was held 3 June and was over-subscribed, so we have arranged another one and wanted to invite you to book your place. It sold out to 100 delegates in less than 15 minutes, so be quick to save your place. This is just one of many initiatives that the University of Kent has put in place to share knowledge and embrace the potential of blended learning, follow the centre on Twitter and also follow the School Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research on Twitter, for the latest events and news.

Date: Tuesday 9 June 2020

Time: 12:00-13.00hrs GMT
Register your place and you will be sent the Zoom event link to join the session. We recommend you check your Zoom access on your pc/tablet/phone beforehand just in case you have any issues, so you can be ready to join the event from the start.

What will you learn during this free webinar?

As online life becomes the new norm now it is more important than ever to be aware of online safety and include this our conversation and interactions with children and young people. Creating resilience to be able to form and maintain healthy relationships and to recognise signs of unhealthy relationships is vital. You will be introduced to the Centre’s simulations Looking out for Lottie, Maryam and Joe: Behind Closed Doors and Zak and learn how they support professionals and children and young people to develop those skills. The session will conclude with a discussion about creating dialogue and rapport with children and young people when discussing their online life.

The experiences of four characters from our child protection simulations will provide opportunities for discussion. You will watch scenes in the simulations, listen to the main areas of concern and join the discussions online.

  • You will see how Lottie is targeted with flattery and gifts as a pull factor.
  • You will see Maryam experience of hate crime incident is a push factor for her.
  • You will see the girlfriend model as a pull factor for Joe.
  • You will see Zak’s transition and, more importantly, isolation as a push factors for him. A focus will also be on ‘who are you talking to online’ when he sends out friend requests.

Book your place on Eventbrite or contact ccp@kent.ac.uk if it is full to be added to the waiting list for the next one.
